RAW Gelände
What do you need to know? Graffiti, ruins, street food, flea market, clubs — that’s the RAW Gelände in a nutshell. It used to be a railroad yard. These days, cool clubs, great bars, and street food stalls have taken over the old industrial buildings.
Is it worth it? If you want to experience Friedrichshain’s nightlife, this is the place. If that’s not really your scene, stop by on Sundays for the flea market — it’s totally worth it.
Our tip: During the day, the RAW Gelände is a fantastic spot for photography. In the evenings, we love wandering around with a beer in hand — very Berlin.
Boxhagener Platz
What do you need to know? Boxhagener Platz sits between Grünberger Straße and Krossener Straße, surrounded by a seriously impressive number of great restaurants, cafés, bars, and shops.
Is it worth it? Absolutely. The square is one of THE gathering spots in Friedrichshain — if you’re wandering through the neighborhood, you’ll always end up passing by Boxi at some point.
Our tip: There’s a weekly market on Saturdays, and on Sundays the flea market at Boxhagener Platz is a real highlight. There’s also a playground on-site — perfect for a family trip to Berlin with kids.
Burgeramt
What do you need to know? Burgeramt was one of the first burger joints in Berlin, starting out as a tiny snack bar. Now there’s a proper restaurant right next door too. Both are always packed — the burgers are simply that good.
Is it worth it? Yes! Even though Berlin now has no shortage of burger places, Burgeramt is still one of our absolute favorites.
Our tip: Try to avoid peak hours — you’ll have a much better shot at getting a table. And whatever you do, order the chili cheeseburger. It’s ridiculously good.
Kino Intimes
What do you need to know? Kino Intimes has the most colorful wall in Friedrichshain — and every time you walk past, it looks completely different.
Is it worth it? The wall is just a lot of fun, honestly. It’s one of the best photo spots in the neighborhood, full stop.
Our tip: Behind that colorful wall hides one of Berlin’s oldest cinemas. Films have been shown here since 1909, and catching a screening is really worth it.
Karl Marx Allee
What do you need to know? Karl-Marx-Allee was East Germany’s showpiece boulevard. With its 1950s residential blocks and Stalinist architecture, it reminds us a little of Warsaw. Look out for old advertising signs from the 1960s, one of Berlin’s most beautiful cinemas, and the Café Moskau.
Is it worth it? The street is genuinely impressive and the buildings lining it are really beautiful. Don’t just ride the subway underneath it — get out and walk it.
Our tip: Walk the street from Alexanderplatz all the way to Frankfurter Tor. As a reward, grab a burger at Burgeramt afterward — it’s only five minutes away.
Modersohnbrücke
What do you need to know? The Modersohnbrücke is a small road bridge spanning a tangle of railroad tracks. It connects the hip part of Friedrichshain with the quieter side. The view over the tracks is raw and quintessentially Berlin.
Is it worth it? Yes! The bridge is popular with locals and visitors alike. In summer, people hang out here with a drink, chat, and watch the S-Bahn rushing underneath.
Our tip: The bridge is at its best at sunset and after dark. That’s when you get a fantastic view of the illuminated S-Bahn station and the city skyline behind it — including the TV Tower.
Neighborhood Tour through Friedrichshain
What do you need to know? Friedrichshain is so diverse that it’s easy to miss a lot when exploring on your own. A neighborhood tour fixes that — your guide takes you straight to the most exciting spots in the area.
Is it worth it? Absolutely! We love exploring a specific part of a city with a local guide — you always discover things you’d never find on your own.
Our favorite tours: The Karl-Marx-Allee Tour is absolutely fascinating and takes you along East Berlin’s most famous street. If you’d rather explore by bike, the bike tour through alternative Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain is a great pick.
