Florence has a classic Mediterranean climate. That means summers are dry and hot, while winters are rainy and sometimes cool.

In July and August, temperatures rarely drop below 95°F (35°C), and it’s not uncommon for them to hit 104°F (40°C).

From November through February, rain is more frequent, though there are still occasional sunny days. Snow and frost are rare. That said, winters can get chilly, with daytime temperatures between 41 and 50°F (5–10°C). The coldest months are January and February.

The Best Time to Visit Florence

Because summers can be brutally hot and winters rainy, the sweet spot is spring and fall. Aim for weeks as close to summer as possible, so you get a good mix of low rainfall and comfortable temperatures.

In spring, May and June are ideal for a city trip to Florence. It’s not too hot yet, and the chance of rain is fairly low at just five to seven days a month. Honestly, Florence is a perfect destination in May!

Florence is also totally worth visiting between late August and mid-October. Late August in particular is a sweet spot — most summer tourists have already left, and the September crowd hasn’t arrived yet. The city is no longer sweltering, and it’s noticeably less packed.

Florence Weather in January

January is one of the rainiest months in Florence — though “rainy” here means an average of just five to seven days. So even in January, you can still enjoy several sunny days.

That said, it is chilly: daytime temperatures usually sit between 41 and 50°F (5–10°C). One upside: there are far fewer tourists in the city in January, even if Florence is never completely crowd-free.

February is similar to January — some rainy days and fairly cool daytime temperatures of around 54°F (12°C). But the sun still makes regular appearances.

There are also fewer visitors around, so you can explore Florence Cathedral or visit the Uffizi Gallery at a much more relaxed pace.

Florence Weather in March

In March, it rains on an average of ten days. Temperatures, however, are already feeling spring-like, reaching around 61°F (16°C) during the day.

The city starts filling up again in March, so it’s best to book your tickets for the most popular museums in Florence in advance.

April is when the season really kicks off in Florence, especially around Easter. Daytime temperatures can reach 68°F (20°C), though rainy days still pop up from time to time.

The city’s gardens begin to bloom. This is also the perfect time to visit the stunning Bardini Garden, as April is when the famous wisteria tunnel is at its peak.

In May, you’ll generally only need a light jacket for the evenings. Daytime temperatures hover around 77°F (25°C), restaurant terraces are packed, and rainy days become increasingly rare.

May is definitely one of the best times to go to Florence, even if the city gets quite busy again.

June marks the official start of summer in Florence. You won’t need long sleeves during the day, and many Florentines head to the beaches of Tuscany on weekends. Some years still bring a few rainy days in June, while in others the rain disappears by May at the latest.

In June, Florence kicks off its Estate Fiorentina (“Florentine Summer”) event series — a lineup of evening events including concerts, theater, and open-air cinema that runs through September at various venues throughout the city center.

July brings virtually no rain at all, and temperatures shoot up fast. While early July might still hover around 86°F (30°C), by late July daytime highs can easily approach 104°F (40°C).

It’s best to plan your sightseeing for the morning or late evening. Plenty of tourists still brave the sweltering historic center in the afternoon, but locals stay in their air-conditioned offices and apartments.

Florence in August is a city full of tourists and very few locals. Most Italians take their vacation in August, and many businesses close during this time.

It’s also still very hot, at least through mid-month. But because the locals are away, it’s actually not as crowded as July or September.

September in Florence is still dry, but no longer as brutally hot. Daytime temperatures can still reach around 86°F (30°C), especially early in the month.

In general, September is an excellent time to visit Florence — it still feels very summery and there’s plenty going on culturally.

September also happens to be when the Chianti wine harvest takes place — perfect for a day trip to the most beautiful places in Tuscany!

In October, rainy days gradually increase, but you’ll still have plenty of sunny ones. You might want to bring a light jacket during the day, though in recent years climate change has meant October in Florence has remained quite warm.

October is a popular time for Tuscany, so book your hotel in Florence well in advance to get the best options.

November in Florence can be rainy, but sunny days still appear regularly. Daytime temperatures are around 59°F (15°C), with mornings and evenings dipping below 50°F (10°C).

You’ll definitely want a warm jacket. Tourist crowds are much thinner in November than in earlier months, and you can also find some great deals on accommodation.

In December, the streets of the city center are decked out in Christmas decorations and there’s a lively shopping buzz. It’s not empty by any means, as many visitors from the surrounding area and other cities in Italy travel to Florence to check out the sights of Florence.

The weather can be damp and dreary, but December also has its share of sunny days, with an average daytime temperature of around 52°F (11°C).

If you’re thinking about spending Christmas in Florence: all museums and restaurants are open during the holidays, so there’s plenty to keep you busy.

When Are There the Fewest Tourists in Florence?

Florence is well visited year-round — the city is never truly empty. It’s a bit less crowded during the winter months, specifically in November and January through February.

But if you want decent weather and fewer tourists, here’s an under-the-radar Florence tip: Late August still has great weather, but most summer tourists have already headed home. Before the September vacationers arrive, you have one to two weeks to enjoy Florence — if only slightly — with fewer crowds.

When Is a Bad Time to Visit Florence?

In January, February, and June, the fashion trade show Pitti Immagine takes place. During this time, many hotels are not only more expensive but also book up quickly, as international industry professionals flood into the city. The exact dates change each year — check them on the website before you book.

We also wouldn’t recommend visiting Florence between mid-July and mid-August. During this period, daily temperatures of around 104°F (40°C) simply make it too hot, and you’ll wear out much faster in that kind of heat.

So if you’re planning to visit Florence with kids, avoid the peak summer period and opt for fall or spring instead.
