Where is Elba?
At 27 kilometers wide, Elba is the third-largest island in Italy after Sicily and Sardinia. But it’s much smaller than either of those — you can drive around all of Elba in two hours.
The island belongs to Tuscany and is part of the Tuscan Archipelago, which consists of seven islands.
Elba is roughly 10 kilometers from the Italian mainland.

Who should consider a vacation on Elba?
Short answer: everyone! Elba is one of the most beautiful islands in Europe and a seriously perfect vacation destination: stunning beaches with crystal-clear water, idyllic mountain villages, and an evergreen landscape packed with viewpoints.
Depending on your travel style, here’s why Elba is totally worth it:
- For couples: Restaurants with sea views, secluded coves, breathtaking sunsets — Elba is perfect for a romantic getaway.
- For families: Long, flat sandy beaches, car-free pedestrian zones, and sailing or diving lessons for kids — Elba is a great choice for families.
- For active travelers: Hiking in the mountains, mountain biking, diving, or sailing — Elba is a fantastic place to stay active.
- For culture lovers: Elba has villages and fortresses thousands of years old, Napoleon’s villas, museums, and Roman excavation sites.
- For nightlife: Especially in the town of Capoliveri, summer nights are lively well into the early hours — even clothing shops stay open until midnight.
What should you absolutely do on Elba?
Swimming and snorkeling at dream beaches
Elba has roughly 50 kilometers of beaches in total — from small, rocky coves to long, flat sandy shores.
Because Elba and the entire Tuscan Archipelago are protected natural areas, the sea around the island is full of coral and fish — making it seriously good for diving and snorkeling.
Among the most beautiful beaches on Elba are Sansone, Fetovaia, and Laconella.
Visiting idyllic mountain villages

Because Elba is very hilly, there are many charming mountain villages — Marciana, Rio nell’Elba, and Capoliveri are among the top things to do in Elba for us.
You can wander through narrow lanes, dine at a typical trattoria, and browse small artisan boutiques — and the elevated locations also offer stunning panoramas of the surrounding landscape and the open sea.
Taking the cable car up Monte Capanne

At around 1,000 meters, Monte Capanne is Elba’s highest peak. At the top there’s a café and an observation platform from which you can see all seven islands of the Tuscan Archipelago all the way to the mainland.
You can get there by cable car or on foot via hiking trails. The latter is recommended for more experienced hikers.
Trying Elban cuisine

Elban cuisine is Tuscan at heart — with a few delicious extras. There’s plenty of fresh fish, of course, but that’s far from all.
The dishes are simple and satisfying: Gurguglione, a vegetable stew made with lots of locally grown produce, or Budino di Castagne, a really delicious chestnut pudding.
Make sure to try the fish dishes too, like squid Elba-style or Penne in barca — penne pasta with clams and béchamel sauce.
Top it all off with a glass of Elban white wine. Honestly, the perfect ending to any meal.
Staying overnight on Elba

Elba has a wide variety of hotels. In summer, you should expect to pay at least 200 euros per night.
The vast majority of hotels are located along the coast. Here are our two favorite places to stay on Elba:

The best places to stay and hotels on Elba
What’s the best way to get to Elba?
Traveling to Elba from Germany
From Germany, your best bet is to fly to Pisa or Florence and rent a car from there.
From either city, you drive to Piombino, where the car ferry to Elba departs. The crossing takes about an hour.
From Pisa it’s about 1.5 hours to Piombino; from Florence it’s about two hours.
You can also fly into Bologna or Rome and rent a car there. From either city, it’s about a three-hour drive to Piombino.
Traveling to Elba from Tuscany
Piombino sits roughly halfway between the north and south of Tuscany, which makes it super easy to add Elba to a Tuscany road trip.
If you’ve already explored the most beautiful towns in Tuscany, you’ll probably be near Piombino anyway. From the port of Piombino, ferries run to Elba multiple times per hour.
Elba also has a small airport with flights from Florence and Pisa. That said, it’s significantly more expensive than the ferry — and honestly less fun. The ferry crossing is part of the whole Elba experience!
Ferry to Elba
From the port of Piombino, the car ferry runs to Elba multiple times per hour between April and October. In winter there are still connections, but far fewer per day.
Elba has three ports: Portoferraio (the largest on the island), Cavo, and Rio Marina. The vast majority of visitors head to Portoferraio, as it has the most connections.
A ticket for two people plus a car costs 70 to 90 euros on weekdays and 100 to 120 euros on weekends.
Several ferry companies operate routes to Elba, so it’s worth comparing tickets and schedules on Direct Ferries.
Note: If you plan to travel to Elba by car in July or August, book your ferry ticket well in advance to secure your spot.
Can you visit Elba without a car?
Honestly, you really do need a car on Elba — without one you’ll be very limited and miss out on a lot of the best spots.
If you’re already exploring Tuscany with a rental car, you can simply take it with you on the ferry.
In July and August, though, Elba’s roads get seriously congested and finding a parking spot becomes a real challenge. If you’re visiting during peak season, a scooter makes much more sense. You can rent one locally.
To reach the beaches, you can also use a free shuttle bus provided by the various municipalities on Elba. The so-called Marebus runs throughout the day to various beaches in the area.
The best time to visit Elba

For a vacation on Elba, we’d recommend September or June as the sweet spot.
The weather is pleasantly warm and the sea is perfect for swimming.
May and October are also lovely — the sea is a bit cooler, but both months are still great for sightseeing.
We’d steer clear of July and August if you can: Elba gets very crowded and hotel prices hit their peak.
How much time should you plan for a vacation on Elba?
Set aside at least three to four days for Elba.
That gives you enough time to explore the most beautiful spots at a relaxed pace, spend a full day at the beach, and maybe even hike up Monte Capanne.
Even better? A full week — so you can really soak it all in.
Is a day trip to Elba worth it?
Unless you’re already in Piombino, a day trip really isn’t worth it.
If you’re coming from Florence or Siena, for example, it’s already a two-hour drive just to reach Piombino — and then another hour on the ferry.
By the end of the day, you’ll have spent five to six hours just getting there and back, and seen very little of Elba.
