Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ecuador expensive?

Ecuador is overall an affordable travel destination. Accommodations and food are especially budget-friendly compared to what you’d pay back home.

That said, many tourist attractions come with a hefty price tag, so Ecuador isn’t the cheapest country in South America. The Galápagos Islands in particular can get seriously expensive.

How safe is Ecuador?

Ecuador is generally a safe country to visit — but some parts of the major cities and coastal regions can be dangerous, so it pays to stay alert.

As with most of South America, keep a close eye on your belongings. Petty theft is more common than you might be used to at home.

At night, take a taxi rather than walking long distances. It’s cheap, easy, and just the smarter call.

When is the best time to visit Ecuador?

It really depends on where in Ecuador you’re headed — the climate varies a lot by region. That said, Ecuador is honestly a great destination year-round.

Our favorite time to visit is September through October.

From June to October is the dry season — the best time to explore the highlands.

The Galápagos Islands can be visited any time of year, and you’ll always encounter incredible wildlife. It’s warmest from July through December.

The Amazon region is worth visiting at any time, though December through February brings very heavy rainfall.

The coast is best from November through April.

What language do they speak in Ecuador?

The official language is Spanish. There are also several indigenous languages spoken throughout the country — Quichua is the most widely used.

Compared to other South American countries, you can get by reasonably well with English in tourist areas. Still, a large portion of the population doesn’t speak it, so learning a few basic Spanish phrases before you go is really worth it.
