Borkum: The Big One
What do you need to know? Borkum is the largest of the East Frisian Islands in the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea, covering 31 square kilometers. Ferries to Borkum depart from Emden. And because there’s so much space on the island, you can even bring your car.
Is it worth it? Absolutely! Borkum has a huge variety of things to do. You can hit the beach, go swimming, and explore the lighthouse and the North Sea Aquarium. Sightseeing and slowing down all in one.
Our tip: Borkum has a low-pollen offshore climate — great news if you usually struggle with allergies. Here you can finally take a real deep breath.

Juist: The Enchanting One
What do you need to know? Juist is the longest of the East Frisian Islands. The easiest way to get there is by ferry from Norddeich. Since cars aren’t allowed here, horse-drawn carriages are the way to get around the island.
Is it worth it? Juist is our personal favorite among the German North Sea islands. It combines all the best qualities of the other islands in one place — you can relax, explore, and get a real feel for the tradition-conscious East Frisian character. And it’s a fantastic destination for families with kids too.
Our tip: The nature on Juist is seriously beautiful. Our favorite spot is the western tip — the Bill. This is where the North Sea and the Wadden Sea meet at wide sandbanks. Truly special.

Norderney: The Vibrant One
What do you need to know? Norderney is the “East Frisian Sylt” and is even popular with celebrities. No surprise there — the island is super modern, lively, and a little extravagant. You can bring your car here too, loading it onto the ferry from Norddeich.
Is it worth it? On Norderney, the quiet charm of East Frisia meets a modern beach scene. There are upscale hotels and cool bars, but also beautiful dune landscapes and a historic lighthouse. Perfect if you like variety.
Our tip: Every year at Pentecost, the White Sands Festival takes place on Norderney. For three days you can watch beach volleyball and live concerts right on the sand and soak up the lively atmosphere in the bars.

Baltrum: The Little One
What do you need to know? Baltrum is the smallest of the East Frisian Islands — which is why locals love to joke: “Baltrum? You’ll be done with it in no time.” It’s also car-free and wonderfully laid-back. Ferries to the island depart from the East Frisian harbor town of Neßmersiel.
Is it worth it? Baltrum is packed with nature, and on this compact island you can genuinely see everything during your stay. It’s also great with kids — there’s a wonderful beach, mudflat hikes, fascinating museums, and plenty to discover.
Our tip: From Neßmersiel you can do a three-hour mudflat hike to Baltrum and then spend a day on the island. We’ve done it ourselves and had a fantastic time. A really cool experience.

Langeoog: The Relaxing One
What do you need to know? Langeoog is another car-free island, reachable from the North Sea spa town of Bensersiel. What really makes Langeoog stand out isn’t its length, but its stunning dune landscape — dunes here can reach up to 20 meters high.
Is it worth it? Totally! Langeoog is wonderfully varied and well known for its excellent wellness offerings. The island has even been awarded the title “Thalasso North Sea spa resort.”
Our tip: The water tower on the 18-meter-high Kaap dunes is the island’s landmark. From the top you have a fantastic panorama all the way to the mainland. Don’t miss it.

Spiekeroog: The Natural One
What do you need to know? Ferries to the car-free island of Spiekeroog depart from Neuharlingersiel — a small fishing village in East Frisia. And the island itself carries on in the same idyllic spirit. Spiekeroog is wonderfully unspoiled and green. There’s also no light pollution at night, which is great for nature and adds to the sense of peace and quiet.
Is it worth it? Spiekeroog feels genuinely nostalgic. There’s no airstrip, just horse-drawn carriages and a small island village with charming islander cottages, cafés, and pretty gardens. The old island church and the museums are wonderful to visit — and the sandy beach speaks for itself. Time seems to have stood still here.
Our tip: From Spiekeroog you can take boat trips to the seal sandbanks in the North Sea. It’s a great experience for kids and adults alike.

Wangerooge: The Active One
What do you need to know? Wangerooge is the easternmost of the East Frisian Islands, and the ferry departs from the fishing village of Harlesiel. Thanks to its exposed location, the waves here are particularly impressive — perfect for water sports enthusiasts.
Is it worth it? If you like to stay active, Wangerooge is your island. You can surf, paddle, and do plenty of cycling. The island also has a narrow-gauge railway — a real specialty. So Wangerooge is a true adventure island for all ages.
Our tip: On Wangerooge there are two sleeping beach chairs — large reclining beach chairs with weatherproof covers and windows. You can rent them and spend a night on the beach under the stars. Absolutely wonderful!

Which East Frisian island is the most beautiful?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder — but personally, we love Juist and Spiekeroog the most.
The nature and beaches are simply stunning, everything has a wonderfully nostalgic feel, and both islands are authentically East Frisian through and through.
Which North Sea island is the most peaceful?
On the East Frisian coast, how quiet an island feels depends a lot on the season — in summer, all seven islands get their fair share of visitors.
That said, the most tranquil of the bunch is Spiekeroog. There’s no airport, no cars, and comparatively few bike paths — it really does feel like a step back in time.
Which island is busier — Borkum or Norderney?
Norderney has more residents than Borkum and offers more activities, so if you want to pack your North Sea vacation with experiences, Norderney is the right pick.
Borkum strikes a great balance between peaceful nature and plenty to keep you busy.
Which North Sea island is best for older travelers?
Baltrum and Spiekeroog are both excellent choices for older visitors. Both islands are very unspoiled, have good walking paths, and are comparatively small — easy to explore at a relaxed pace.
Do the East Frisian Islands have tides?
Yes. The coasts of the East Frisian Islands are subject to tides — ebb and flow. Here’s the quick science behind it: the interplay of gravitational and centrifugal forces between the moon, the sun, and the Earth is what created the tidal flats of the Wadden Sea.
That’s why the islands of Wangerooge, Spiekeroog, Baltrum, and Juist can’t be reached by ferry at the same time every day — the ships have to wait for high tide.

Can you vacation on Memmert?
Memmert is a bird island near Juist. While it technically belongs to the East Frisian Islands, you can’t vacation here — it’s a bird sanctuary and one of the last truly wild areas in Germany.
Only one person lives on Memmert: the bird warden.
You can spot the island from Juist’s Bill on clear days, and from late August onward you can join short guided excursions from Juist to Memmert. Tickets for the tours aren’t available online though — you can only get them at the Nationalpark Haus Juist.
