Then our top 7 hidden gems in Crete are exactly what you need. We’ll share real tips from locals, chance discoveries, and lesser-known corners of the island that most visitors never find.

The East of Crete

Although Crete is Greece’s largest island and one of Europe’s most popular destinations, there’s an entire region here that’s still genuinely off the beaten path. Crazy, right?

Hardly any tourist has eastern Crete on their radar — and honestly, that’s a bit unfair. But it’s also what makes it so special, because out there you can experience Crete without the crowds, even during the peak season.

So what’s actually out there? The most scenic road on the island runs through eastern Crete — specifically from Agios Nikolaos to Sitia — making it a seriously great pick for road-trippers.

Sitia itself is a truly beautiful fishing village. Even further east lies Kato Zakros, with a lovely pebble beach, the ruins of a Minoan palace, and a cool gorge that’s well worth exploring.

Our tip: You can easily combine Sitia and Kato Zakros with a visit to the palm beach at Vai. It’s also located in eastern Crete and is the main reason many vacationers make the trip east at all. The beach is one of the dream beaches of Crete, but it’s no longer a secret.

Agia Marina Donkey Rescue

Crete is known for its beaches, its gorges, and its delicious food. But at the Agia Marina Donkey Rescue, you get to experience the island in a completely different way.

Old and unwanted donkeys live on the grounds near Matala. Many of them worked hard for years and would likely be gone without this sanctuary.

During your visit, you can pet the donkeys and take fun photos with them. There are also chickens and goats roaming around — really sweet, and a genuine highlight for animal lovers.

The Agia Marina Donkey Rescue is one of our favorite hidden places in Crete — a refreshingly different activity for your Crete vacation, and an absolutely perfect outing with kids.

Our tip: The Agia Marina Donkey Rescue runs entirely on donations. Even bringing the donkeys a few carrots or apples helps — they’ll get them at feeding time.

Sunrise on the Beach in Platanias

Sunrises have something magical about them. Especially on vacation, when you can feel the world getting brighter around you with every passing second and the sun growing warmer on your skin.

One of our most personal recommendations for hidden gems in Crete: at least once during your Crete vacation, set your alarm early and watch the sunrise.

We watched it on the beach at Platanias (view on Google Maps). It’s one of the most beautiful areas to stay in Crete. In the early morning, you’ll still have the beach almost entirely to yourself. Magical!

Our tip: Sunrise light is perfect for stunning vacation photos. Definitely give it a try. Afterwards, you can cool off right in the sea. There’s seriously no better way to start the day.

Sunset in Chania at the Harbor

Even better: start the day with a sunrise and end it with a sunset. When was the last time you actually made a conscious point of doing both?

Not often, right? You already know our spot for the sunrise. A really beautiful vantage point for a sunset is right at the Venetian harbor in Chania.

The harbor promenade itself doesn’t catch the sun in the evening. To see the sunset properly, you need to head toward the Maritime Museum.

Once you’ve turned the corner, right behind the Venetian fortress, you’ll have a fantastic panorama. A little tucked away, but all the better for it — a genuinely great find.

Saint Agios Nikolaos Church in Georgioupolis

The Saint Agios Nikolaos Church is a wonderful attraction and a true under-the-radar pick in northern Crete. It’s located in Georgioupolis, one of the most beautiful towns on Crete.

The church stands virtually in the middle of the sea. To reach it, you walk along a long path covered with large rocks — it sounds more adventurous than it actually is, but you’ll still want to watch your step.

What really is adventurous is the drive there by car — we got lost more than once. That said, you get to discover a really beautiful, crowd-free side of Crete along the way.

Our tips: There are several churches with this name on Crete. Your best bet is to enter Georgioupolis Beach into your navigation — that’ll get you to the right one. And definitely bring your camera; the spot is perfect for beautiful landscape shots.

Restaurant San Giorgio in Malia

When it comes to food, a good local tip is worth its weight in gold. We got this one from a local in Malia: Restaurant San Giorgio.

Admittedly, we’re not entirely sure it’s still a total secret — it’s located right in the heart of the old quarter and is always busy. But the food is absolutely worth it.

The dishes at Restaurant San Giorgio are seriously delicious. A Greek salad is always a solid choice, but you should definitely also try the moussaka — it’s outstanding. There’s a vegetarian version too.

Our tip: Grab a table on the balcony and watch the hustle and bustle on the street below.

Restaurant Karnagio in Agios Nikolaos

Restaurant Karnagio in Agios Nikolaos was a genuine chance discovery. We walked in without knowing what to expect — and now it’s one of our go-to recommendations for great food in Crete.

Especially if you’re after a nice restaurant with really great value for money. We started, of course, with a Greek salad.

For the main course, we shared a meat platter — really delicious! The atmosphere is great too. The restaurant is colorfully decorated and sits right on the beautiful inland lake in Agios Nikolaos.
