Quad Biking in Crete

What to expect: A quad tour is one of the most popular and action-packed activities in Crete. There’s something seriously fun about zooming along dusty country roads on a quad bike. Depending on which tour you book, you’ll also stop at spots with sweeping panoramic views, charming fishing villages, or beautiful hidden coves. Trust us: quad biking in Crete is totally worth it!
Activity location: West of Malia or around Rethymnon, pickup from select vacation spots available.

4-Hour Quad Safari with Snack from Rethymnon
Off-Road Jeep Tour Across the Island
What to expect: Not into quads? You can also explore Crete’s gravel roads in a rugged jeep — and honestly, this is one of our favorite ways to experience the island. Along the way, you’ll meet adorable goats, discover rustic villages, and cool off in a secluded bay. A real highlight of any Crete vacation.
Our tip: We strongly recommend the self-drive tour — it’s way more fun and, in our opinion, the cooler Crete experience.
Activity location: In eastern Crete, hotel pickup available

Cycling in Crete

What to expect: Want to explore Crete at a more relaxed pace? Just rent a bike and start pedaling. If your hotel is near a town, you can do a lovely little city ride. If you’re feeling more adventurous, the island’s hilly terrain makes it perfect for putting together your own mountain bike route. For a more laid-back option, a guided e-bike tour is the way to go.
Our tip: You’ll find good bike rental shops all over the island, and hotels sometimes have their own bikes available. You can often rent one for as little as 15 euros per day.
Activity location: On your own, anywhere on the island; the guided e-bike tour starts in Analipsi
4-Hour E-Bike Tour with Traditional Brunch
Hiking and Canyoning in Crete
What to expect: The Samaria Gorge — at 13 kilometers, the longest gorge in Europe — is one of the most spectacular sights in Crete and the most popular hiking trail on the island. You should be in decent shape, though: the 16-kilometer trail takes about six hours. The Kourtaliotiko Gorge is a shorter option at around three hours. It’s less touristy and our top pick if you’re hiking with kids.
Our tips: Especially in the hot summer months, start your hikes as early as possible. The Samaria Gorge also has guided options if you’d rather not go it alone. The Kourtaliotiko Gorge, on the other hand, is really popular for canyoning — you hike through the riverbed, rappel down next to waterfalls, and jump into natural pools.
Activity location: Both gorges are located in southern Crete

Snorkeling and Diving in Crete
What to expect: No Greek island vacation is complete without getting into the Mediterranean. Snorkeling and diving are two of the best things to do in Crete — spotting colorful sea creatures and spending hours in the water never gets old. We absolutely love it!
Our tips: You can snorkel pretty much anywhere. Some of the most beautiful beaches in Crete for snorkeling are Elafonisi Beach and Balos Lagoon. For diving, you’ll want a guide. One of the most popular diving areas is near Chania, with impressive volcanic rock reefs.

Stand Up Paddling

What to expect: Stand-up paddling is one of our favorite things to do in Crete. Just gliding across the water, keeping your balance, and soaking in the stunning views along the coastline — it’s genuinely relaxing. You don’t need a lesson to get started; it’s super easy to pick up on your own. That said, if you’d rather go with a group, there are guided tours too.
Our tip: At loads of beaches across Crete, you can rent a board for as little as 10 euros an hour. Definitely worth trying even if you’ve never done it before.

Surfing in Crete

What to expect: Surfing is one of those Crete activities that surprises people. Sure, it’s not a world-famous surf hotspot like Bali, Fuerteventura, or Portugal — but you can absolutely catch some waves here. If you already have experience, just rent a board. If you’re new to it, we’d recommend booking a lesson.
Our tip: The waves in Crete are on the gentler side, which makes surfing here perfect for beginners or as a fun activity with kids.
Activity location: Kissamos
Our tour tip: You can book a lesson with, for example, Kalo Surf. A roughly 3-hour group lesson for 60 euros is seriously good value — even compared to the world’s most famous surf spots.
Horseback Riding in Crete
What to expect: Love horses? A horseback riding excursion might be just the thing. This activity takes you mostly through the interior — riding through Crete’s mountains with breathtaking views of the landscape all around you. The tour we recommend here is run by a proper horse farm, so you know the animals are well cared for.
Our tips: Horseback riding is a wonderful experience for seasoned riders, but also totally doable for beginners and kids. One thing to keep in mind: stay away from beach horseback riding offers — you often can’t be sure how the animals are kept or treated.
Activity location: Finikia Horseriding in the village of Finikia

Pottery Workshop in Crete
What to expect: Greece is famous for its beautiful ceramics — but what’s better than buying a clay pot? Making one yourself, of course. At a pottery workshop, you have two options: throw together a simple clay pot in just 15 minutes, or sign up for a full one-hour session and learn the traditional art of wheel throwing. A genuinely creative thing to do in Crete.
Activity location: Between Agios Nikolaos and Elounda
Our tour tip: Cretan Olive Oil Farm offers a fantastic workshop. A one-hour session costs 60 euros.
Wine, Olive Oil, and Raki Tasting in Crete
What to expect: Greece and great olive oil, delicious wine, and intense raki — they just go together. On a tasting tour, you’ll discover how all three are made and, naturally, get to try them all. You’ll also sample typical Greek food along the way. Honestly, this is one of the best food experiences you can have on the island.
Activity location: Around Heraklion

Cooking Class as a Cool Activity in Crete
What to expect: In our Crete insider tips article, we share some really great restaurant recommendations. But what’s even better than finding a great restaurant? Learning to recreate those Greek specialties at home. A cooking class makes that happen — and trust us, you won’t regret it. Spoiler: it won’t be gyros. It’ll be something even better.
Our tip: A cooking class is a genuinely different kind of activity in Crete. All the spices you use during the class are available all over the island — pick some up to take home and you can relive the experience long after your trip.
Activity location: In Mires, near Matala in southern Crete
Cooking Class on an Olive Farm
Dinner Show Theater in Crete
What to expect: Looking for something to do in Crete in the evening or on a rainy day? A dinner show is a great call. While performers sing, dance, and pull off daring acrobatics on stage, you’ll get a taste of Greek mythology — all paired with a delicious dinner or a few cocktails. The show runs every Tuesday and Friday.

Paragliding in Crete
What to expect: Want a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience with a serious adrenaline kick? Go paragliding. You’ll soar through the air with an experienced guide and enjoy incredible views of the island and the Mediterranean below.
