Here’s where we’d recommend getting off to catch more must-sees nearby. You’ll always need to walk a short distance from the stop.
Stop in the Old Town
The second stop in the Old Town is perfect for three popular points of interest: Alter Markt, the Farina Fragrance Museum, and the Cologne brewhouses.
Right near the stop is the Sünner Walfisch Brauhaus — it’s not overly touristy, and the beer and food are really good.
If it happens to be raining, the Old Town stop is also a great jumping-off point for TimeRide Cologne and the Wallraf-Richartz Museum.
We’d suggest saving this stop for the end of your tour rather than the very beginning — especially if you’re also doing the boat tour, since the dock is just a short walk from here.
Stop at the Chocolate Museum

One of our absolute favorite neighborhoods in Cologne is the Belgian Quarter. If you’re in the mood to wander away from the tourist crowds, hop off at the 13th stop at Friesenplatz.
A Few More Pointers:
- The bus tour passes the Hohenzollern Bridge, but if you want to walk across it, do that before your bus ride. It’s not far from the starting point.
- We’d recommend catching the first bus at 10 AM — especially if you’re planning to get off at multiple stops. You’ll want the extra time.

What's the difference between the red and yellow buses?
The only difference is the color. There used to be two separate operators, but today there’s just one — CityTour Köln in partnership with KölnTourismus.
In practice, this means you can board either bus with your ticket, whether it’s red or yellow.
Is the Cologne hop-on hop-off bus wheelchair accessible?
According to the provider, the tour is wheelchair accessible and you can bring your wheelchair on board.

For us, there are three solid alternatives to the Cologne hop-on hop-off bus — especially interesting if you’ve already visited Cologne and don’t need to cover all the same ground again.
#1 City Tour by Trackless Train
If you want to focus on the historic center or the highlights around the zoo, we’d highly recommend the Cologne Bimmelbahn (trackless tourist train).
There are two routes: the Schoko-Express and the Zoo-Express. Both follow the hop-on hop-off principle, and you can get off and back on once during a round trip.
Each route has two stops. The Schoko-Express stops at the Cathedral and the Chocolate Museum. The Zoo-Express stops at the Cathedral and the Zoo. A round trip costs 7 euros per person.

#2 Walking City Tour

#3 Sightseeing with a Public Transit Ticket
Of course, you can also explore Cologne completely on your own.
If you’re happy to walk and want to cover a lot of ground — similar to hop-on hop-off — Cologne’s subway and light rail network gets you close to all the major attractions.
A day ticket for public transit is also cheaper than the hop-on hop-off bus. The downside: you’ll need to plan everything yourself, transfer more often, and familiarize yourself with the network beforehand.
If it’s your first time in Cologne or you only have one day, we wouldn’t recommend this option. The KVB, the local transit operator, is also known for fairly frequent delays.
