The Classic

1-Hour Panorama Boat Tour in Cologne on the Rhine

  • Duration: 1 hour
  • When: Daily
  • Departure point: Usually at one of the docks in front of the Musical Dome, to the left of the Hohenzollern Bridge
  • Price: Adults €18, children €9, free for children under 3, discounts available for students and seniors in some cases

If you’re visiting Cologne for the first time and want to experience the city from the water, we highly recommend the 1-hour panorama Rhine cruise.

There are two operators running this tour: Reederei Köln-Düsseldorfer (KD) and Kölntourist. We’ve done the Rhine cruise in Cologne with both companies and honestly loved it.

In the end, it doesn’t really matter which operator you go with — they cover the same route. You cruise about half an hour upstream on the Rhine and then turn back around.

Just pick the operator with the departure time that works best for you. KD ships run every day, while Kölntourist offers tours on selected days. On weekends, all operators run.

On the panorama cruise, you’ll see Cologne from a completely different perspective and can take some stunning photos of Cologne Cathedral. You’ll also pass other Cologne attractions, like the Old Town and the Rheinauhafen.

On KD ships, there’s a tour guide via smartphone. Once you connect to the ship’s Wi-Fi, you get all the info about the sights right on your phone — really cool!

Kölntourist is old school. You get information via a pre-recorded audio track played over the speakers, which can be more or less easy to follow. There’s no alternative panorama cruise in Cologne with live commentary.

We recommend buying your ticket online in advance. That way you’re guaranteed a spot and don’t have to hunt down a ticket booth on the day.

Our tip: Make sure to arrive at the dock early, especially if you want to sit up on the deck in nice weather. Those are the best seats, and they’re absolutely worth it.

The Longer Classic

1.5-Hour Skyline Boat Tour in Cologne

The RheinLand ship from KölnTourist on the Rhine in Cologne
The Rhine cruise in Cologne is even more fun in nice weather. KölnTourist also offers 90-minute Rhine cruises in Cologne, including trips on its flagship vessel, the RheinLand.
  • Duration: 1.5 hours
  • When: Almost daily except Monday (also not on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the off-season)
  • Departure point: Usually from dock no. 10 in front of the Musical Dome, to the left of the Hohenzollern Bridge
  • Price: Adults €23.90, children, students €11.90, seniors €19.20, free for children under 3

If you have a bit more time on your city trip to Cologne, the extended panorama cruise is a great choice. We’d point you toward the 1.5-hour Skyline Tour by Kölntourist.

The ships — with the lovely names MS Rheinperle, MS Rheinland, and MS Rheintreue — follow roughly the same route as the 1-hour boat tour, just going a little farther.

Beyond the well-known highlights, the view of the right bank of the Rhine — known as the “Schäl Sick” — is truly spectacular. You’ll see the Rhine steps, one of our favorite under-the-radar spots in Cologne, as well as the cool RTL building.

Information is provided via a pre-recorded audio track only. The commentary can be more or less easy to follow.

For this tour too, we recommend buying your ticket online in advance. You’ll get a clear overview of departure times and are guaranteed a seat.

The panorama cruise pairs perfectly with a stop at one of the Cologne brewpubs.

2-Hour Lounge Cruise – Evening Boat Tour in Cologne

The lounge cruise in Cologne lasts 2 hours. The highlight of the evening boat tour in Cologne is without a doubt the one-of-a-kind view of Cologne Cathedral at sunset (© KD Koeln-Duesseldorfer Rheinschiffahrt).
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • When: June through September – Thursday, Friday, and Saturday
  • Departure point: Varies. We recommend checking with the KD ticket office directly under the Hohenzollern Bridge before your tour. The office is a white ticket booth with the red-and-blue KD logo.
  • Price: Adults €29, children €9, free for children under 3

Another Rhine cruise in Cologne we really love is the 2-hour evening lounge cruise. You can only take this boat tour between June and September.

That’s because it doesn’t depart until 8 PM, when it’s still light out in summer. With good weather, you’ll be right in time for the sunset over Cologne Cathedral. That’s when you can take some truly beautiful vacation photos. A real local favorite.

What makes the evening boat tour in Cologne even more special is the live music played up on deck. Sometimes it’s a DJ, sometimes a band. The music is on the chill side — no loud party music.

We’ve even done this tour as part of a bachelor party in Cologne and thought it was awesome. The route is similar to the Skyline Tour — we got the feeling that the ship just moves a bit more slowly.

Since the boat only runs on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, you definitely need to book your ticket online in advance.

In the evening, this KD ship turns into a party venue on the Rhine in Cologne. The party boat plays a mix of Schlager, 80s hits, and house beats.
  • Duration: From 90 minutes up to 6.5 hours
  • When: Usually on weekends
  • Departure point: Varies depending on the day and event. Be sure to check your booking confirmation in advance.
  • Price: from €24.90

A truly awesome experience is a night on one of the party boats in Cologne. It’s a whole different kind of Rhine cruise. This is especially popular for bachelor parties or groups of friends spending a weekend in Cologne.

There are two operators with party boats in Cologne: KD and Kölntourist. Most parties take place on KD ships, though. The lineup is incredibly varied.
From Schlager parties to 80s, 90s, house, carnival, Ü29 parties, hip-hop sessions, local Cologne bands, and Ballermann-style live parties — there’s seriously something for every taste.

We can’t give a blanket answer on which days exactly the party boats are running. The schedules change every year and there isn’t a party boat every weekend.

If you’re keen on a night on a party boat, we recommend checking out the schedules of both operators. You’ll find them on the KD website and the Kölntourist website.

On those sites you can also book your spot directly. You absolutely have to do this — the parties are very popular and sell out fast. There are no tickets available at the door.

And if you’re still craving more of the city after your boat tour in Cologne, you can keep the fun going with a great city tour of Cologne. Find the right place to stay in our Cologne hotel tips.

Frequently Asked Questions about Boat Tours in Cologne

Is a boat tour in Cologne worth it?

Absolutely! A Rhine river cruise in Cologne is totally worth it. We personally love it and go on a Rhine cruise ourselves every now and then.

You can relax between or after sightseeing and discover Cologne from the water — it’s a super exciting change of pace.

You’ll also pick up a lot of interesting facts about the sights along the way. And honestly, the one-of-a-kind view of Cologne Cathedral alone makes it worth it every time.

Which Rhine cruise in Cologne is the best?

It really depends on what you’re looking for. You can’t compare a panoramic boat tour with a party boat.

If you’re visiting Cologne as a tourist with limited time, we recommend the classic 1-hour panorama cruise. It gives you a really great overview.

If you have a bit more time — especially in the evening — the evening lounge cruise is our top pick. The trip lasts two hours, and at sunset you get the most stunning view of Cologne Cathedral.

If there’s a special occasion and you’re in the mood for a unique evening on the water, go for the all-inclusive dinner cruise.

If you love learning as you go, enjoy Cologne anecdotes, and have a bit more time, the 3-hour harbor tour is the one for you.

And if you’re in Cologne with friends or for a bachelor party, a party boat with Schlager music or other genres is obviously the way to go.

How much does a Rhine river cruise in Cologne cost?

It depends on which cruise you want to take. The most affordable option is the 1-hour panorama boat tour.

The classic KD cruise costs about 18 euros for adults and 9 euros for children. Kölntourist charges the same.

The priciest option is the all-inclusive dinner cruise.

How long does a Rhine cruise in Cologne take?

The short answer: it varies. The shortest option is the 1-hour Panorama Boat Tour.

The longest cruises are on the party boats. The Carnival party on the KD ship on November 11th runs for just under 6.5 hours.

For the regular tourist boat trips in Cologne, plan for about one to three hours.

Where do the ships depart from in Cologne — where are the KD dock and other piers located?

That’s a great question, and unfortunately there’s no single answer. We often have to search for the boats ourselves, since the docking stations change regularly.

All departure points for Cologne boat tours are located between the Musical Dome and the Deutzer Bridge. Your cruise will definitely start somewhere along that stretch.

In total, there are 10 docking stations. Number one starts at the Deutzer Bridge, and number ten is right in front of the Musical Dome.

The exact departure points change frequently. Most panoramic boat tours (one hour and 1.5 hours) currently depart from the docking stations near the Musical Dome, to the left of the Hohenzollern Bridge.

KD in particular tends to change its dock assignments more often than other operators. Our recommendation: before your tour, head to the KD ticket office and ask.

The KD ticket office is located directly beneath the Hohenzollern Bridge — it’s a white ticket booth with the red-and-blue KD logo. Ideally, the dock number will be in your confirmation email.

Willi Ostermann ship at the dock in Cologne
Most docking stations for the classic panoramic boat tour in Cologne are located in front of the Musical Dome, to the left of the Hohenzollern Bridge.

Can you travel from Cologne to Düsseldorf by boat?

Theoretically, yes — but in practice, there’s currently only a day trip departing from Düsseldorf to Cologne and back to Düsseldorf.

A direct boat trip from Cologne to Düsseldorf isn’t available at the moment.

Do the tourist boats in Cologne run year-round?

No, the boat tours in Cologne don’t run year-round. The main season for the tours we recommend runs from April through October.

During the Advent season — from late November through the last weekend before Christmas Eve — there’s a romantic winter boat tour in Cologne.

You can take the winter Rhine cruise with live music during this time from Thursday through Sunday, with three departure times per day. Tickets cost €23.90 for adults and €11.90 for children.

Is a Rhine river cruise in Cologne worth it with kids too?

Definitely! A Cologne boat tour will be a lot of fun for the kids — there’s plenty to discover from the water.

To keep things engaging, we recommend one of the shorter panorama boat tours. Children get a discount on every tour and often only pay half price.

Toddlers under 3 are usually free. Note that children are not allowed on the Rhine dinner cruises or on the party boats.

Do I need to book my Cologne boat tour ticket in advance?

It depends. You don’t absolutely have to book the classic panorama cruise in advance — but we strongly recommend that you do.

Especially on nice days and in summer, the tours are really popular and sell out fast. On top of that, long lines form at both the dock and the ticket booths.

Booking online means you’re guaranteed a spot — because when the boat is full, it’s full. Plus, you can head straight to the boat without having to track down the ticket booths, which can be surprisingly tricky to find.

Many tours — like the evening cruises or party boats — need to be booked online anyway. They either sell out quickly or there’s simply no on-site ticket sales at all.

Can I reserve a fixed seat on the ship?

Only the dinner cruise assigns you a fixed seat. For all other Cologne boat tours, seat reservations aren’t possible.

If you want a great spot — like on the upper open deck in summer — we recommend arriving at the dock early. A long line often forms as much as an hour before departure.

Do you get a discount on Rhine river boat tours in Cologne with the KölnCard?

On some of them, yes. You won’t get a discount on every tour — but with the KölnCard you can save 20 percent on the panorama rides, the Skyline Tour, and the Harbor Tour.

Are the boat tours in Cologne accessible?

Partially. Most operators confirm that you can board the ship in a wheelchair and take the tour.

However, on many ships the restrooms and the upper deck are only accessible via stairs — so wheelchair users won’t be able to reach those areas.

This is the case for the following tours:

  • 1-hour Panorama Boat Tour on the MS Willi Ostermann
  • 1-hour Panorama Boat Tour by Kölntourist
  • 1.5-hour Skyline Tour
  • 3-hour Harbor Tour

Fortunately, this doesn’t apply to all ships. Several KD vessels are explicitly listed as fully or partially accessible — at minimum, there’s always access to a restroom.

This applies to several KD ships (note: this refers to the ship itself, not every tour it operates):

  • MS RheinVision by KD (frequently used for the Panorama Boat Tour)
  • MS RheinFantasie by KD (often used for the lounge cruise, the dinner cruise, and as a party ship)
  • MS RheinHarmonie by KD (wheelchair-accessible restroom; often used for the lounge cruise and the Panorama Tour)

If you’re unsure whether you’ll be able to board and access the restroom in a wheelchair, we recommend contacting the operator in advance.

Here are the phone numbers:

  • KD Service Center: 0221 2088318
  • Kölntourist: 0221 121600

During high or low water levels, there may also be restrictions for wheelchair users — it’s worth checking ahead in those cases too. Electric wheelchairs are not permitted on most ships.

Can you bring your dog along on a Cologne boat tour?

You’re welcome to bring your dog on the panoramic boat tours offered by both operators. Sometimes you’ll need to pay a small fee of around 4 euros.

Dogs are not allowed on any of the other boat tours in Cologne.

Can you bring your luggage on the boat tour in Cologne?

No — large suitcases and bags are not allowed on most tours. We recommend bringing only a regular handbag or a small backpack.

It’s best to leave your large suitcase at your accommodation in Cologne.
