Where is Lake Chiemsee in Germany?
Lake Chiemsee is located in southeastern Bavaria and is a popular destination for day trips and short breaks. The nearest major city is Munich, which you can reach in about an hour by car. The Austrian border is even less than 30 minutes away.
Some of the better-known towns around Lake Chiemsee are Prien, Bernau, Gstadt, and Chieming. But what we actually love even more are the islands in the lake — Fraueninsel and Herreninsel are seriously worth a visit.

Most rooms have a balcony — naturally decorated with geraniums in true Bavarian fashion — where you can enjoy the sunset over the water with a glass of wine.
Our personal highlight is the hotel’s own pastry shop: day in, day out, you’ll find the most wonderful cakes, tortes, and baked goods waiting for you. Seriously good.

Hotel Neuer is located in Prien, one of the larger towns on Lake Chiemsee. There are plenty of opportunities for strolling and dining out. Ferries to the islands also depart from here, and it’s a great starting point for trips into the mountains.

You want to be by the water, but don’t have the time or budget to fly to the coast? You don’t need to.
Hotel Chiemseefischer sits just a few meters from Lake Chiemsee. What we love most is that the maritime flair carries through to the décor as well — even while dining and relaxing, you’ll feel like you’re by the sea.
The restaurant brings together Mediterranean delicacies and classic Bavarian specialties. In summer, you can sit out in the beer garden and enjoy the view with an ice-cold beer or a glass of red wine.
By the way: the name Chiemseefischer (Chiemsee Fisherman) is no coincidence. The hotel’s history goes back to the 1950s, when it was built by a local fisherman.

Ever heard of Grabenstätt? This is where you’ll find the largest tributary flowing into Lake Chiemsee — the Achen Delta. A true natural paradise, perfect for long walks and bike rides. You can also spot many native bird species here.

Wastelbauernhof is located just outside Bernau, which we mentioned under #3. You can reach the Bernau lido by car in just 12 minutes — and in between, you’re surrounded by nature, greenery, mountains, and plenty of peace and quiet.

Pension Ober is a country house in Siegsdorf, run by the Döpper family with warmth and genuine hospitality.
It’s a real play paradise for children: the little ones can help with feeding the animals, go on a guided pony ride, or even ride along on the tractor. There’s also a large playground with a trampoline and plenty of room to zip around in the pedal go-karts.
A special highlight: weather permitting, guided torch-lit hikes are offered in the evenings too.
For overnight stays, Pension Ober offers both spacious family rooms and full apartments.
Where is Pension Ober located and what can you do there?
Pension Ober is in the small village of Siegsdorf, about 20 kilometers from Lake Chiemsee. You’re surrounded by mountain streams, meadows, and climbing rocks — ideal for outdoor sports. With the right thermals, you can even spot hang gliders and paragliders overhead.

Hotel zur Sonne is in the small village of Rimsting — a bit quieter than the bigger towns. Within just a few minutes by car, though, you’re in Gstadt or Prien, two of the best-known spots on Lake Chiemsee. You’re also only a few minutes’ walk from the water.

The Fischerstüberl is a country house in alpine style, set right in front of a breathtaking mountain panorama.
Tradition and regionality are front and center: the rooms are furnished with cherry wood furniture crafted by local artisans, and the restaurant cooks with the seasons using ingredients sourced from the region. The Fischerstüberl is particularly well known for its fish specialties.

Gut Ising is in Chieming, one of the larger towns on Lake Chiemsee — you can see it on the map above. Chieming offers a 6-kilometer stretch of shoreline for swimming and sunbathing, plus a really lovely town center.

Tennis and golf aren’t your scene? You prefer things rustic and believe that sports belong outdoors in nature? Then Herbstbauernhof might be the perfect place to stay near Lake Chiemsee for you.
