Staying on the Beach in Cancún: Zona Hotelera

The Zona Hotelera is the right choice if you want a proper beach vacation at a stylish hotel and feel like treating yourself to something really special.

This is Cancún’s luxury strip — home to the most beautiful beaches in Cancún. The area is built almost entirely for tourists, with large resort hotels lining the coast one after another.

That said, there’s still plenty to do beyond the pool. You’ll find a shopping mall, casinos, golf clubs, and the Torre Escénica viewpoint, all within easy reach. The hotels and bars keep the evenings lively too.

Getting to downtown is easy by bus or taxi, and that’s where you’ll find more authentic Mexican restaurants and a bit more local flavor.

Staying Downtown

Downtown Cancún is the smart choice if you want affordable accommodation and plan to use Cancún as a base for exploring the wider region.

Downtown feels noticeably more authentic than the Zona Hotelera — you’ll find great street food, plenty of local Mexican restaurants, and a more lived-in atmosphere. It’s still a tourist-friendly area, so it’s a safe place to stay.

From here, you can easily get to Cancún’s beaches by bus. The ADO bus terminal is also right in the neighborhood, with regular departures to popular day-trip destinations like Tulum, Chichén Itzá, and Playa del Carmen, as well as direct connections to Cancún Airport.

One of our favorite places to stay downtown is The Quetzal. It’s a personal and unique boutique hotel in Cancún where you’ll feel right at home almost immediately. The breakfast is delicious and there’s a lovely pool outside.

If you’re after a hostel, the Nomads Hotel & Hostel is a great shout. It has a fantastic rooftop terrace with a pool — perfect for meeting fellow travelers. Both dorms and private rooms give you a solid amount of privacy.

Staying on Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is perfect if you want a beach vacation with a genuinely peaceful vibe — away from the big resort crowds.

Isla Mujeres is a small island just off the coast of Cancún, connected to the mainland by ferries that take just under 30 minutes.

Life here is noticeably more laid-back than in Cancún — there are hardly any cars, and the island feels far less built-up than the Zona Hotelera. It’s still touristy, but in a much more relaxed way.

There’s still plenty to keep you busy: a theme park, the underwater museum MUSA, and beaches that are brilliant for snorkeling. You definitely won’t run out of things to do.

Staying near Cancún Airport

If you have a stopover at Cancún Airport, your best bet is to book a hotel near the airport for the night.

The selection of airport hotels in Cancún is fairly limited. If you’re already spending several nights in Cancún or the surrounding area, you don’t need one — you can get to the airport quickly at any time of day from anywhere in the city.

But for a stopover, or if you’re arriving from somewhere farther away in Mexico, an airport hotel makes a lot of sense.

Our top pick is the 1st Luxury Warehouse. It’s very close to the airport, offers a shuttle to the terminals, and delivers excellent value for money. The rooms are comfortable and you’ll barely notice any aircraft noise.

If you want to stay right inside the airport complex, the Hilton Garden Inn is the most convenient option. It’s on the pricier side for what you get, but for a stopover the location is unbeatable.
