Beaches in Cancún

The number one highlight in Cancún is, without a doubt, the beaches. Bright turquoise water and fine white sand—absolute paradise! You’ll find the best beaches in the Zona Hotelera.
This area is almost completely lined with large resorts. As a result, many beaches are private, and the overall vibe feels quite commercial. In addition to beaches and hotels, there are also casinos and shopping malls, such as the well-known La Isla Cancún Paradise Experience.
But there are also a few public beaches that feel less built up. Our top pick: Playa Delfines.
We’ll share even more details about the best beaches in Cancún in a separate article.
Downtown Cancún

While the Zona Hotelera is designed for tourists, Cancún’s downtown offers a more authentic side of Mexico. Around the central Parque de las Palapas, you’ll find plenty of budget-friendly eateries, street food stalls, and vibrant nightlife.
That said, downtown Cancún doesn’t really have major sights. You can stroll through the Plaza Las Américas shopping mall or enjoy a coffee at one of the cozy cafés on Avenida Carlos Nader.
Theme Parks in Cancún

Cancún is also known for its theme parks. The most popular ones are Ventura Park, Xoximilco, and Xcaret.
Ventura Park is a water park and perfect for a vacation with kids. It’s located in the south of Cancún and is best reached by car or taxi. Tickets start at around 700 MXN for adults. More info is available on the official Ventura Park website.

Xoximilco is inspired by the famous Xochimilco district in Mexico City, where colorful trajineras (boats) float along canals lined with gardens.
In Cancún, you can experience the same festive vibe in a theme park version. If you’re up for a ride on a lively party boat, Xoximilco is the right place. It’s located just south of Cancún. Tickets start at about 2.000 MXN.

A little further out you’ll find Xcaret Park, probably the most famous of all Yucatán’s attractions. It’s a nature park with beaches, cenotes, wildlife, and countless activities.

Isla Mujeres and MUSA

Just a short boat ride from Cancún, Isla Mujeres is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the region and is without a doubt one of the best places to visit in Cancún.
Here you’ll also find one of the most unique Cancún attractions: the MUSA Underwater Museum. Instead of walls and galleries, this museum is located right in the Caribbean Sea.
Hundreds of sculptures have been placed on the ocean floor, creating an artificial reef that you can explore while snorkeling or on a glass bottom boat tour. It’s definitely one of the Cancún must see attractions.
To visit MUSA, you’ll need to join a tour:

Apart from MUSA, Isla Mujeres is perfect for relaxing, swimming and sunbathing. Another highlight is taking a day trip that combines Isla Mujeres with the unspoiled Isla Contoy – one of the top things to see in Cancún.

Viewpoint Torre Escénica

The Torre Escénica is one of the most popular Cancún tourist attractions. This 80-meter-high observation tower takes you up in a cabin that slowly rotates, giving you an incredible 360° panorama.
From the top you can spot the turquoise Caribbean Sea, the skyline of Cancún, and the vast Laguna Nichupté. It’s one of the best things to do in Cancún if you want a bird’s-eye view of the city.
Tickets cost around 20 USD, but entrance is free if you already have a ticket to Xcaret Park. The same goes for the ferry tickets to Isla Mujeres with Xcaret boats, which include access to the tower. The ferry terminal is conveniently located right next to it.

Laguna Nichupté

Laguna Nichupté is the large lagoon that stretches between downtown Cancún and the Zona Hotelera with its beaches. You can explore it by kayak or take a ride on a glass-bottom boat.
The lagoon is surrounded by mangroves and is home to a huge variety of wildlife. It’s one of the best things to do in Cancún if you love nature. You can spot birds, iguanas, and with a bit of luck, even crocodiles.
A sunset kayak tour is especially magical, but it’s also a great experience during the day.

Day Trips from Cancún
There are many amazing cities, beaches, and ancient sites on the Yucatán. If you want to see more than Cancún itself, it’s worth taking some day trips to explore the best attractions near Cancún.
Chichén Itzá

Chichén Itzá is one of the absolute must-see places in Mexico. The ancient Mayan city is one of the seven new wonders of the world – just like Machu Picchu and the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio. Countless tours to these impressive Mayan ruins start from Cancún.
We recommend booking a tour that also includes a cenote and the charming town of Valladolid in addition to Chichén Itzá.

We have also written two separate guides for Chichén Itzá and Valladolid.
Tulum

Tulum is another highlight on the Riviera Maya and one of the best places to visit near Cancún. The famous Mayan ruins sit right on the beach, making it one of the most unique Cancún attractions. You can stay overnight in Tulum, but it also works perfectly as a day trip.
You can combine a visit with the Mayan city of Cobá or the Sian Ka’an biosphere reserve.

Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen is mostly known for its beaches. To be honest, there aren’t many other things to do in town, so we wouldn’t recommend going just for that. But if you’re already heading to Tulum or Cozumel, it makes for a nice stopover.
If you enjoy shopping, this is one of the best places to visit in Cancún’s surroundings. Playa del Carmen’s famous 5th Avenue is a long pedestrian street full of shops, bars, and restaurants.
Cozumel

The island of Cozumel lies just off Playa del Carmen and is one of the best places to visit in Cancún if you want a quieter vibe. You can get there by ferry from the Muelle de Playa del Carmen, with a ride of around 45 minutes.
Tickets are available directly on the websites of the providers Ultramar and Winjet. You can also book Ultramar tickets on GetYourGuide.
Book ferry tickets from Ultramar
On Cozumel, you’ll find beautiful beaches that are usually far less crowded than those on the Riviera Maya. The island is also one of the top things to see in Cancún for snorkeling, cycling, and just relaxing by the water.
A guided tour is a great way to discover the island. Most tours start directly at the ferry terminal in San Miguel de Cozumel.

Cenotes

Cenotes are natural sinkholes filled with crystal-clear water, found all over the Yucatán. They’re amazing for swimming, and some are even open for diving.
Each cenote has its own vibe: some are covered by cave ceilings, while others open right up to the sky. No two are the same.
If you’re wondering what to see in Cancún and nearby, the cenotes around Tulum, Valladolid, or Mérida are especially worth it. But if you don’t want to travel far, you’ll also find great ones close to Playa del Carmen.
We’ve collected all our tips for the most beautiful cenotes in the Yucatán in a separate article.
Practical Tips for Cancún
Finally, here are a few helpful tips to make your trip to Cancún even smoother.
#1 Where to stay in Cancún?
Cancún offers all kinds of accommodations, from luxury resorts and boutique apartments to simple hostels. In our dedicated hotel guide for Cancún, you’ll find our best tips on where to stay depending on your budget and style.
#2 Is Cancún safe?
Yes, Cancún is safe for travelers. Both the Zona Hotelera and the city center are considered safe areas, and you can even walk around in the evening without worry.
Just avoid walking around late at night in the outer neighborhoods. It’s better to take a cab then, as those areas are quieter and less safe than the main tourist spots.
We’ve shared even more tips on safety in Mexico in a separate article.
#3 Getting to Cancún
Cancún has a major international airport, making it one of the best connected Cancún tourist attractions in itself. Direct flights from Europe arrive regularly, including nonstop connections from Frankfurt. The easiest way to find flights is with Skyscanner.
From Cancún airport, you can take the ADO buses to Cancún center, Playa del Carmen, or Tulum. Tickets are available on the ADO website. If that doesn’t work, you can also use ViajoMucho or Checkmybus.
You can also take a cab or book a private transfer in advance.

#4 Getting around Cancún
Cancún is spread out, so you can’t really explore the whole city on foot. In the city center, however, you can easily reach most places on foot.
To get from the beaches to the city center, bikes are a fun option, and many hotels rent them out. Otherwise, buses are cheap and run frequently.
Buses in Cancún
To reach the Zona Hotelera or the beaches, wait on Blvd. Kukulcan and wave down a bus. Always ask if it’s going to your destination (for example, Playa Delfines). The ride costs 12 MXN, paid in cash directly to the driver.
You’ll also see many colectivos, shared minibuses that follow fixed routes but stop wherever passengers want. They cost 10 MXN and are a very local way to get around, but they can be tricky to figure out if you don’t speak Spanish.
Uber and taxis in Cancún
If you prefer convenience, use Uber or take a taxi. Cabs are more expensive, but Uber is usually cheaper.
For day trips to the best Cancún attractions in the area, it’s easiest to book a private transfer.
