The Best Time to Visit Vietnam
We recommend Vietnam as a travel destination in winter. February and March offer the best weather for a road trip through Vietnam. The south is hot and dry during those months, while the center and north warm back up to as high as 24°C (75°F) after winter. And the best part about February and March is that there’s no rainy season anywhere.
But don’t worry — you don’t have to limit your trip to just those two months. January and April are also great options. In January, though, temperatures in the north can drop to as low as 10°C (50°F), while in April the south can hit around 35°C (95°F). You’ll just need to adjust your Southeast Asia packing list accordingly.
During all other months, you can still travel to Vietnam — but at least one region will be experiencing bad weather.
These differences exist because the country is very long and narrow, spanning three climate zones. Each region — south, central, and north — has its own distinct weather and its own ideal time to visit.
However, Vietnam’s top attractions are spread across the entire country. So a road trip is your best bet, and that means you’ll need to balance the timing across regions.

The Best Months for a Road Trip in Vietnam

Weather in Vietnam in February and March
Starting in February, you’ll find good weather throughout all of Vietnam. After winter, central Vietnam and the north slowly start to warm up again. During both months, you can expect temperatures between 18°C and 21°C (64–70°F) in Hanoi. And even in the center, the weather feels warm because the winter wind is no longer blowing.
In the south, there’s no real summer or winter — it’s always hot, with temperatures around 30–33°C (86–91°F). In February and March, however — just like in the other two regions — there’s no rainy season. That means it won’t be extra humid and you won’t have to worry about heavy downpours. Temperatures during the dry season are also a bit cooler.
By March, you can also comfortably head to the far north — to Sapa or Ha Giang — and hike through rice fields. Temperatures there are around 18°C (64°F).
Our tip: Start your road trip in February in Saigon and travel northward. That way you’ll catch the cooler weather in the south and the warmer March weather in the far north.
The only downside to February and March is that it’s often overcast in the north. This can make a trip to Halong Bay, for example, a bit unpleasant. Be sure to factor in weather like this when you’re planning.
Weather in Vietnam in January and April
In January, the weather in the south is similar to February and March. However, central Vietnam and the north are still in the middle of winter. January is the coldest month here, with average temperatures of 22°C (72°F) in the center and 17°C (63°F) in Hanoi in the north.
In the far north, it’s even colder — snow is possible on the mountains. On top of that, it can be quite windy, especially in the center, and there may be rain on some days.
If you prepare for those temperatures and pack a warmer jacket, January can still work well for your road trip.
In April, it’s the exact opposite. The weather in central Vietnam and the north is great. In the south, on the other hand, it’s now really hot, with temperatures around 35°C (95°F). But if you don’t overpack your daily schedule and drink plenty of water, you can still do a road trip through all of Vietnam at this time.
Weather in the Other Months
In all other months, expect bad weather in at least one region. Here’s what conditions look like month by month across the different parts of the country — and where your best bets are.
Weather in May
- Good travel weather: Central Vietnam and Northern Vietnam
- Less favorable travel weather: Southern Vietnam
In May, central Vietnam still has excellent weather, with 27°C (81°F) and a warm sea for swimming. The north is also pleasantly warm. The rainy season does slowly begin here, but in May it’s still fairly mild.
In the south, the monsoon season arrives. On top of the already high temperatures, it brings humid conditions and heavy rain. We wouldn’t really recommend traveling there from this point on.
Weather from June through July
- Good travel weather: Central Vietnam
- Less favorable travel weather: Southern Vietnam and Northern Vietnam
June and July are really only good travel months for central Vietnam. Temperatures are around 30°C (86°F) and it rains on average only seven days.
The south and north are both in their rainy season. Rain typically comes in short, heavy bursts. The rainy season in the north isn’t quite as bad as in the south, where flooding can occur frequently. In both regions, most of the rain falls in the evening.
Weather in August

- Less favorable travel weather: Southern Vietnam and Northern Vietnam
August brings the worst travel weather in Vietnam. The rainy season slowly begins in the center, while it hasn’t yet ended in the south and north. It rains on more than half the days in almost every part of the country. You’ll only stay relatively dry if you’re based in central Vietnam — for example, in Da Nang. It doesn’t rain quite as often here, and the showers are usually brief.
You should definitely avoid Sapa or Ha Giang. There’s a lot of rain right now, and landslides are possible in the mountain regions. Hikes and excursions are no fun under those conditions.
On the bright side, temperatures across the whole country are around 30°C (86°F).
Weather from September through October
- Good travel weather: Northern Vietnam
- Less favorable travel weather: Southern Vietnam and Central Vietnam
In central Vietnam and the north, temperatures slowly start to drop again. In addition, rainfall eases up in the north — it’s less humid now, making it a great time to visit northern Vietnam. In September, the rice terraces in the far north are also at their most beautiful, as they’re just about ready for harvest.
In the rest of Vietnam, however, the rainy season is still in full swing. From October onward, central Vietnam sees more rain than anywhere else in the country.
Weather in November
- Good travel weather: Southern Vietnam and Northern Vietnam
- Less favorable travel weather: Central Vietnam
From now on, you can travel to southern Vietnam again. The rain eases up and temperatures are very comfortable at around 26°C (79°F).
The north also has really lovely weather. In Hanoi, you can expect an average of 22°C (72°F), and in Sapa and Ha Giang in the far north around 18°C (64°F). November is also when you can count on the most sunshine in the north.
Only central Vietnam is still in its rainy season. Together with October, this is when the center sees the most rainfall.
Weather in December

In December, winter arrives in central and northern Vietnam. In Hanoi, temperatures are still around 18°C (64°F) — totally manageable if you bring a jacket. In the center, it’s a few degrees warmer, but wind and rain make conditions pretty unpleasant.
In the south, the weather is still great.
Rainy Seasons in Vietnam
Each of Vietnam’s three regions has its rainy season at a different time and with a different intensity.
In the north, the rainy season is relatively manageable. You can expect short, heavy showers in the late afternoon or evening. It doesn’t rain nearly as much here as in the south or center. What’s more unpleasant is the very hot and humid weather that the rainy season brings.
The south has the longest rainy season, lasting a full six months — from May through November. Especially between June and October, you should be prepared for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, and sometimes even flooding. That said, it still doesn’t rain every day, and showers usually last only one to two hours at a time.
The center has the most intense rainy season. In October and November alone, it receives more rainfall than anywhere else in the country. There are only a few days when you’ll stay completely dry.
For each region, there are typically a few months when the rainy season peaks. You should avoid traveling to that region during those months, as flooding and storms can occur.

Tet Holiday in Vietnam
During the Tet holiday, Vietnamese people celebrate their New Year — it’s the most important festival in the country. It takes place every year sometime between late January and mid-February and lasts one week.
Vietnamese people have four public holidays during this time, which they use to travel around the country and visit family and friends.
The streets and cities are extremely busy. On top of that, many restaurants and attractions are closed during this period.
It’s best to avoid the Tet holiday when planning your trip to Vietnam, or at least prepare thoroughly for it.
