When Is the Best Time to Visit South Tyrol?

South Tyrol is a year-round destination — great for skiing in winter and hiking in summer.

From roughly November through April, South Tyrol is covered in snow. The ski season runs from December through early April. In our opinion, a South Tyrol vacation during this time is only worth it for winter sports enthusiasts.

Otherwise, the best time to visit South Tyrol is from May through October. During these months you can hike to your heart’s content and marvel at the incredible colors of the mountain lakes.

The warmest months are June, July, August, and September — but that’s also when the most tourists are around.

May and October are quieter, yet the weather is still great — making these months true under-the-radar picks for South Tyrol.

Climate Chart for South Tyrol

The climate in South Tyrol varies greatly depending on where you are. This is mainly due to differences in elevation, which cause temperatures to vary considerably.

Rule of thumb: Temperatures drop by almost 1 degree for every 100 meters of altitude gain.

For that reason, we’ve put together two climate charts:

  • Bolzano (approximately 262 meters above sea level)
  • Compatsch on the Seiser Alm (approximately 1,850 meters above sea level)

The Weather in South Tyrol by Month

Here’s a closer look at the climate for each month — so you can figure out when the best time to visit South Tyrol is for you.

Weather in South Tyrol in January

January is the coldest month in South Tyrol and perfect for a winter vacation. The ski season is in full swing. That said, we don’t recommend January if you want to explore the sights of South Tyrol.

Weather in South Tyrol in February

February is just like January — a great month for winter sports. There’s plenty of snow and it’s cold, so bundle up!

Weather in South Tyrol in March

March is still part of the ski season, but temperatures are slowly starting to climb. Down in the valley, you can already enjoy great sightseeing. At higher elevations, expect temperatures below freezing.

Weather in South Tyrol in April

We wouldn’t recommend a mountain vacation in April. Most ski resorts in South Tyrol close in early to mid-April, but there’s still too much snow for hiking.

In the valleys, such as the Adige Valley, you can still have a great city trip.

Weather in South Tyrol in May

May is a transitional month in South Tyrol. Most of the snow has melted, and only the highest-elevation areas are still genuinely cold.

Down in the valleys — for example in Merano or Bolzanosummer-like temperatures already prevail. You can explore the most beautiful lakes and towns in South Tyrol or cycle along the Adige Cycle Path.

Weather in South Tyrol in June

June kicks off the summer season in South Tyrol. Temperatures rise and you can already jump into swimming lakes like Lake Caldaro.

The temperatures are perfect for hiking, since it’s pleasantly cool up in the mountains.

Keep in mind that many tourists are already out and about in June — though it’s still less crowded than in July or August.

Weather in South Tyrol in July

In July, it’s usually genuinely hot down in the valleys of South Tyrol. Up in the mountains, on the other hand, temperatures are lovely for hiking.

In the towns, July can often be too hot to do much. Book a hotel that sits a few hundred meters above sea level.

That said, July is peak season, and popular spots like Pragser Wildsee or the Seiser Alm get very crowded.

Weather in South Tyrol in August

August is the quintessential vacation month in Italy, and virtually all Italians have time off. As a result, the highlights are extremely busy — even more so than in July.

Places like the Tre Cime di Lavaredo or Lake Carezza are better visited in the shoulder season.

We recommend staying in a relatively lesser-known area of South Tyrol in August. That way you can explore the mountain landscapes without the tourist crowds.

Weather in South Tyrol in September

For us, September in South Tyrol is like a better August. There are fewer tourists, but it’s still genuinely warm. The weather is ideal for hiking, swimming, and cycling.

Another bonus: hotel prices are a notch lower for a September trip than in July or August.

Weather in South Tyrol in October

We love October in South Tyrol! It’s the perfect fall destination. Peak season is over and there are comparatively few tourists around. It’s not as warm as in summer, but you can still go hiking without any trouble.

October is also Törggele season — a traditional food custom in South Tyrol that runs through mid-November.

Weather in South Tyrol in November

November is a rather awkward month for South Tyrol. It’s cold and the first snow falls, but you can’t ski yet and the weather is already too unpleasant for hiking.

We’d generally advise against visiting South Tyrol in November — unless you’re keen on exploring the region’s towns.

Weather in South Tyrol in December

December is a wonderful month in South Tyrol. It’s genuinely cold, but that means you can already enjoy great skiing.

South Tyrol is also known for its Christmas markets, all of which take place in December.

We especially love the Christmas markets in Sterzing, at Lake Carezza, in Brixen, and in Eppan.

The Best Time to Visit South Tyrol for Hiking

The hiking season in South Tyrol runs from May through October.

From June through September, South Tyrol is at its warmest with the least snow. The weather is perfect and there are plenty of visitors around — which makes hiking here the safest. If something happens to you, help can be reached quickly.

The downside of the summer months, however, is that many trails get very crowded, which can make it hard to truly enjoy nature.

May and October are different: we love these months for hiking. It’s quite cold in the mountains, but it’s much quieter.

At some spots, even the cable cars are shut down during these times — meaning you can only get up on foot, and you might find yourself having popular hiking destinations all to yourself.
