In a nutshell
- The best time to visit Slovenia is summer — specifically from May to October. Winter is worth it mainly for skiers, with the ski season running from December to March.
- For swimming and hiking, we recommend June, July, August, and September. May and October are also excellent for a road trip, with significantly fewer tourists around.

Climate Chart for Slovenia

This climate chart gives you a clear picture of what to expect from Slovenia’s weather throughout the year.
Weather in Slovenia by Month
Already know which month you’re planning to travel? Here’s a honest breakdown of what the weather is actually like, month by month.
Weather in January, February, and March in Slovenia
January and February are deep winter in Slovenia. In the mountains it’s cold with heavy snowfall — perfect conditions for skiers and snowboarders. For everything else, we’d honestly advise against a Slovenia trip during these months.
March still sees plenty of snow, and the first half of the month is great for winter sports. Temperatures do climb slowly, though, and by the end of March the snow starts to melt.
Weather in April in Slovenia
April is a seriously underrated time for a trip to Slovenia. Don’t expect summer-like temperatures, but you can already do a fantastic road trip. We’d recommend April if you want to explore Slovenia’s highlights without the crowds.
It’s still a bit cool for hiking and swimming, but April works really well for city breaks — think Ljubljana or Koper.
Weather in May in Slovenia
May is our go-to recommendation if you want to do a road trip through Slovenia outside of peak season. At lower elevations, T-shirt weather is already totally doable.
Conditions are great for exploring cities and natural sights — and you won’t be fighting through tourist crowds. That makes May a brilliant time to visit Lake Bled or Kranjska Gora.
That said, you should still avoid high mountain areas — there’s snow up there. Swimming in the sea or lakes is only for the brave at this point.
Weather in June in Slovenia
June is one of our favorite months for Slovenia. Summer has properly arrived, making it ideal for visiting coastal towns like Piran, hiking in the mountains, or doing a rafting tour in Bovec.
Tourist numbers do pick up, but it’s still manageable — you can enjoy sightseeing at a relaxed pace without feeling rushed.
June does have its fair share of rainy days, but that’s easy to work around: museums and thermal spas are some of our favorite activities in Slovenia on a wet afternoon.
Weather in July in Slovenia
July marks the start of peak season in Slovenia. At the main attractions, expect bigger crowds — though when we visited in July ourselves, we honestly didn’t find it overwhelming.
The weather is warm and sunny, but pack for the occasional rainy day or thunderstorm. The sea hits its ideal swimming temperature, and hiking conditions in the mountains are as good as it gets.
Weather in August in Slovenia
August is peak tourist season, and it’s especially well suited for a seaside vacation in Slovenia or mountain hiking.
The downside: it’s busy and accommodation prices are high. But here’s the thing — Slovenia is still nowhere near as packed as, say, Italy or Croatia, so an August visit is still a really solid choice.
Weather in September in Slovenia
September is honestly the sweet spot for visiting Slovenia. Fewer tourists than August, but the sea is still warm enough for swimming and the mountains are usually still snow-free.
Rainfall is low, sunny days are plentiful, and temperatures stay summer-like. It doesn’t get much better than this!
Weather in October in Slovenia
In October, temperatures start to drop and you’re a little too late for a proper beach holiday.
But October is still great for a road trip through Slovenia — temperatures stay mild and most attractions see very few visitors.
Hiking is still doable, but stick to lower elevations. Snow is already falling in the high mountains.
Weather in November in Slovenia
November is not a great time for a road trip through Slovenia. It’s cold and grey, and the mountains are in an awkward in-between phase — no skiing yet, no hiking either.
The one upside: accommodation in November is affordable and you’ll have most places entirely to yourself.
Weather in December in Slovenia
Have you ever thought about spending the Christmas season in Slovenia? We’d highly recommend it. Ljubljana has a beautiful Christmas market, and Lake Bled blanketed in snow is genuinely magical.
If the cold doesn’t bother you and you love snow, December is a wonderful time to travel to Slovenia.

The best time to hike in Slovenia is clearly the summer months from June through September — that’s when the mountains are snow-free.
If you’re planning shorter hikes that don’t go into the high alpine zones, April, May, and October also work well. Coastal walks or vineyard trails are great options during those months.
