Where is Patagonia?

Patagonia is a mountain region in the south of Chile and Argentina. It begins in Chile at roughly the latitude of Puerto Montt and in Argentina near Neuquén.
The southernmost part of Patagonia is Tierra del Fuego, with Cape Horn. The most popular destinations in Patagonia are Torres del Paine National Park and Punta Arenas on the Chilean side. Top highlights in Argentina include Bariloche, El Chaltén, and the Perito Moreno Glacier.

What is the climate like in Patagonia?

The climate in Patagonia is unlike anywhere else in the world. In a single day you can experience everything from snow and powerful wind gusts to brilliant sunshine. The chance of rain is pretty consistent throughout the year.
Since the weather is extreme in every season, you should definitely get a feel for the climate before you go.
Broadly speaking, summer in Patagonia runs from December to March. This is when it’s warmest and stormiest in the mountains — and when the sun shines most frequently.
Winter is long, lasting from May to October. During these months it’s very cold with heavy snow. On the plus side, it’s almost completely calm.
November and April are essentially shoulder months, during which literally anything is possible weather-wise.
To give you a clear picture of the climate in Patagonia, we’ve put together a climate chart for Punta Arenas — the largest city in the region.

When is the best time to visit Patagonia?
The best time to visit Patagonia is during the summer months of December, January, February, and March. February has great weather too, but it’s seriously crowded.
Patagonia’s main attractions are in the mountains. That’s why we don’t recommend the winter months of May through October — there’s heavy snow and it’s bitterly cold.
The shoulder months of November and April are a real wildcard. The upside is fewer tourists, and if you get lucky with the weather, you’ll have an absolutely perfect trip. But you might also hit snow and freezing temperatures — it’s genuinely unpredictable.
When is the best time to visit Torres del Paine National Park?

Torres del Paine National Park is the top attraction in Chile and especially popular with hikers. The colors in the national park are absolutely stunning — which is exactly why good weather matters so much here.
The best time to go is, as with the rest of Patagonia, the months of December, January, and March.
We’ll now walk you through the weather in Patagonia month by month, with specific notes on Torres del Paine each time.
All our tips for visiting Torres del Paine National Park are in a dedicated article.
January and February

January and February are peak travel season in Patagonia. It’s midsummer and vacation time in Chile — the warmest time of year, but also the most crowded.
These months are ideal for hiking, with the highest chance of sunny and warm days. Even in midsummer it rarely gets truly hot up in the Patagonian mountains, though. The wind blows very strongly at this time of year — that’s just part of the experience.
Accommodations and buses fill up fast, so plan and book well in advance. This is especially true for places to stay in Torres del Paine.
If you want to hike the popular W Trek or O Trek, book your accommodations at least four months ahead.
One thing to note: February is noticeably more crowded than January, since essentially all Chileans take their vacation then. January is when peak season is just getting started, so we’d lean toward recommending that month over February.
March and April

We’re big fans of Patagonia in March and April. Peak season is winding down and fall is setting in. The colors across the region are simply breathtaking.
With snow on the peaks and trees blazing in shades of red, yellow, and green, Patagonia becomes a genuine paradise for photographers.
There’s also significantly less going on during these months, so you can travel more spontaneously. For Torres del Paine, though, you should still book your accommodation in advance.
The downside is that it’s already considerably colder by this point, and especially in April there can be heavy snow. It’s usually still windy too. All in all, Patagonia is better suited for a trip in March than in April.
May through October

From May through October it’s off-season in Patagonia. We only recommend these months if you’re after skiing or you’re a true snow enthusiast.
Many trails in Torres del Paine are closed during this period. The national park itself stays open, but we don’t recommend visiting Torres del Paine then — there’s simply too much snow and it’s very cold.
If you do want to travel to Patagonia in winter, Bariloche is a solid option. There’s a popular ski resort there, so there’s plenty going on even in the colder months.
November and December

In November, Patagonia comes back to life and snowfall becomes less frequent. The hiking trails in Torres del Paine reopen and towns slowly start filling up with visitors.
It’s not really warm yet in November, though — which is why we recommend December more.
By December, most of the snow has melted and temperatures start climbing. For this month too, book your accommodation in Torres del Paine a few months in advance.
What to Wear in Patagonia
No matter when you go, always pack for every kind of weather. You’ll barely need light summer clothes, but you’ll probably have those with you on your trip through South America anyway.
Waterproof clothing and a rain poncho are absolutely essential — you’ll very likely hit at least one rainy day regardless of when you visit.
Waterproof hiking boots are also a must. Good grip and dry feet make hiking in Patagonia so much more enjoyable.
Always pack a winter jacket too, because even in summer the strong winds up in the mountains make it feel really cold.
