When Is the Best Time to Visit Montenegro?
For us, May, June, and September are the best time to visit Montenegro for a road trip through Montenegro. You’ll have pleasant temperatures — cool enough for sightseeing in Montenegro or hiking, and warm enough to spend the afternoon on the beach. On top of that, Montenegro isn’t too crowded during those three months.
July and August are also solid travel months for Montenegro. However, you’ll have to deal with very hot and oppressive weather. And in peak season, especially along the coast, it gets incredibly crowded.
Depending on your activity, the ideal time to go to Montenegro shifts a bit:
- Swimming: June and September (July and August are nicely warm, but very crowded)
- Sightseeing: May, June, and September
- Hiking: June, September, and October
- Skiing: December–February
Climate in Montenegro
Montenegro’s climate splits into two distinct regions.
Along the coast, you get a Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot and dry, while winters are mild and wet.
In Montenegro’s highlands and mountains, the climate is continental to alpine. Summers are cool to warm, with one or two more rainy days than on the coast. Winters are cold and snowy — perfect for skiing!

Weather in Montenegro in December, January, and February
December, January, and February are the best time to visit Montenegro for skiing.
In the mountain region, the ski season is in full swing. The mountains are blanketed in snow and daytime temperatures hover around 32°F (0°C).
There’s not much going on along the coast during these months. The weather here is gray, rainy, and cold, with temperatures around 50°F (10°C).
Weather in Montenegro in March and April
March and April are the shoulder season between winter and summer.
In the mountain region, the snow is just starting to melt. In March you can still ski at higher elevations, while in April the first hiking trails begin to open.
On the coast, March and April are generally still cool. Especially in March, temperatures only reach about 54–59°F (12–15°C). April warms up a little (around 61–66°F / 16–19°C). It’s actually great weather if you want to do city sightseeing without beach stops and don’t want to deal with big crowds.
Weather in Montenegro in May and June
May and June are right in the sweet spot — some of the best time to visit Montenegro for sightseeing and hiking.
On the coast, temperatures are now around 73–81°F (23–27°C). Perfect weather to explore the sights and then unwind on the beach afterward. The sea in May and June is a refreshing 64–68°F (18–20°C), though — so not quite bathtub-warm yet.
In the interior, you’ll find ideal mountain conditions. It’s cool and green, and hiking tours or other outdoor activities in Montenegro are genuinely enjoyable.
Weather in Montenegro in July and August
In July and August, the coast is hot and packed. We were there in July and could barely find a spot at some of the beaches in Montenegro — people were literally towel-to-towel. This is largely because much of Europe, including many countries in Eastern Europe and Germany, is on summer break at that time.
If you’re exclusively planning a beach vacation in Montenegro and want to stay at a hotel with a private beach, the weather is absolutely perfect for that. Sightseeing and public beaches are still doable — especially if you know a few lesser-known spots in Montenegro — but it can get genuinely exhausting.
In the mountain region, it also gets quite warm, but nowhere near as hot as on the coast. Hiking is still possible — just watch the intensity and don’t push too hard in the midday heat.
Weather in Montenegro in September and October
Honestly, September is our top pick for the best time to visit Montenegro for swimming. It’s beautifully warm (79–82°F / 26–28°C), the water temperature is still around 73°F (23°C), and the crowds start to thin out. In October you can still swim, but it slowly begins to cool down.
For hiking, September and October bring perfect conditions again, and the fall colors are seriously stunning. Put the Montenegro National Parks Lovćen and Durmitor on your list — they’re spectacular in autumn.
Weather in Montenegro in November
Along with March, November is one of the trickiest months to visit Montenegro. It’s cold and wet both on the coast and inland. The ski season hasn’t kicked off yet, and swimming is firmly off the table at 57–63°F (14–17°C).
