A cyclone is a tropical storm that forms when water temperatures rise and the upper layer of the ocean evaporates faster than the lower layer.
This can happen in the Indian Ocean during the summer months from November to March, bringing a tropical storm with it.
The people of Mauritius have plenty of experience dealing with them. That said, it doesn’t mean you’ll be flooded or blown away if you visit in summer. Most cyclones pass by the island, at most bringing overcast skies and rough seas.
Regional Differences: Which Coast to Visit and When?
Temperatures across Mauritius are generally pretty consistent, except in the mountains. On Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire, Pieter Both, and Le Pouce, it’s noticeably cooler than on the coasts — about 5 degrees less on average.
So if you’re planning any mountain hikes, bring a light layer and some rain protection just in case.
On top of that, the mountainous interior traps rain clouds rolling in from the ocean. As a result, the west coast gets significantly less rain than the east coast, where the trade winds shape the climate.
On the east coast, the Mauritian winter from April to October tends to be a bit cooler and — above all — very windy.
The best time to visit the east coast of Mauritius is from November to March.
Even during those months, the east coast stays cooler than the rest of the island — which can actually be a real bonus during the hot season.

The summer months bring the most rainy days in Mauritius — though they’re hardly comparable to a rainy day back home! All-day rain is really rare.
A rainy day in Mauritius looks something like this: sun, sun, sun, rain shower, sun. And all of that at around 30°C. Honestly, a quick refreshing shower every now and then is actually pretty welcome.

Most travelers still head to Mauritius to escape the cold winter months back home. It can get quite hot and humid at that time of year, but it’s still a whole lot better than grey skies and freezing temperatures.
