The Climate in Khao Lak

Plenty of sunshine and little rain – but when is the best time to visit Khao Lak? We’ll tell you!

When you travel to Khao Lak, you’ll find a humid tropical climate year-round. The classic four seasons simply don’t exist here.

Instead, the weather in Khao Lak is shaped by the monsoon, which divides the year into rainy and dry seasons. The dry season begins in December and runs through April. During the transition periods, the weather is especially unpredictable.

During the dry season, sunshine hours increase and rainy days gradually drop off. Humidity is lower too, making the heat much more bearable. If you’re sensitive to weather changes, the dry season months are your safest bet.

Temperatures hover around 30°C (86°F) throughout the year — so you can pack summer clothes whether you’re visiting in the dry or rainy season.

The water temperature of the Andaman Sea stays pretty consistent too — between 22 and 24°C (72–75°F) year-round.

When Can You Travel to Khao Lak on a Budget?

If you want to save some money, take a look at June through August. That’s when prices for hotels in Khao Lak can be significantly cheaper.

With up to 20 rainy days per month, things are less predictable — but the savings are real. The showers are usually short and intense rather than all-day affairs.

We’ve actually been to Khao Lak in June ourselves. When it rained, we signed up for a cooking class — honestly one of the coolest things to do in Khao Lak regardless of the weather.

When Is Rainy Season in Khao Lak?

Rainy season in Khao Lak kicks in during May and gradually intensifies. It peaks between October and December — when it rains on almost every single day.

During rainy season, anything goes — from brief showers to days of non-stop rain. On top of that, the humidity is seriously intense, which can wear you down pretty quickly.

The wind whips up strong undercurrents and high waves, making swimming off the beach impossible on most days. It’s also a poor time for diving — underwater visibility drops to almost nothing.

The Weather in Khao Lak for Every Month

Already have a specific travel window in mind? Here’s what to expect from the Khao Lak weather, month by month.

Khao Lak Weather in January

January is the start of the best travel season in Khao Lak. The sun shines up to ten hours a day, there’s barely any rain, and conditions are perfect for a classic beach vacation.

Khao Lak Weather in February

February is another standout month for Khao Lak — sitting right in the heart of the dry season.

With temperatures of up to 35°C (95°F) and loads of sunshine, you’ll see Khao Lak at its absolute best. It rains on at most three days, and even then only briefly.

Khao Lak Weather in March

March keeps the good weather going: abundant sunshine, clear water, and temperatures that don’t dip below 22°C (72°F) even at night.

You’ll barely see any rain and enjoy gorgeous summer conditions — making it a great destination for a March getaway!

Khao Lak Weather in April

April is the last reliably dry month. You’re still guaranteed warm beach weather and can soak up the sun for up to ten hours a day.

Rain is rare and the wind stays calm. The diving paradises of the Similan and Surin Islands are open for their final full month of the season.

Khao Lak Weather in May

Temperatures and sunshine hours in May are still solid, but the chance of rain starts climbing.

If you travel in this transitional month, budget for up to 13 rainy days. Thailand’s weather can be unpredictable though — you might get lucky and barely see a drop.

Khao Lak Weather in June

The sun loses a bit of punch in June and shines for around seven hours a day — still workable for a beach vacation.

Just keep in mind that in the worst case, it could rain for roughly half the month. It doesn’t get cold though — temperatures still hover around 30°C (86°F).

Khao Lak Weather in July

European summer lines up with a so-so weather phase in Khao Lak. With temperatures between 24 and 31°C (75–88°F) and at least six hours of sunshine, it’s well suited for a mix of sightseeing and beach time.

On the up to 13 rainy days per month, swimming is usually off the table — the sea gets too rough.

Khao Lak Weather in August

Weather-wise, August is almost identical to July. For swimming, you’re better off sticking to the hotel pool.

That said, August is a great time to explore more of the country.

Khao Lak Weather in September

From September onward, you’ll need real flexibility in your plans. Rainy days can account for two-thirds of the month.

Book boat tours and snorkeling trips only on short notice — operators can’t run them in bad weather.

Khao Lak Weather in October

From October, the monsoon hits Khao Lak at full force. It rains for almost the entire month — everything from days of continuous downpours to occasional heavy showers.

The sun barely makes an appearance, and a beach vacation just isn’t worth it at this point.

Khao Lak Weather in November

November is hands-down the worst month to visit. You’ll get a maximum of five hours of sun per day, and swimming is really only an option in the pool.

Day trips become a logistical headache — and riding a scooter through non-stop rain gets old fast.

Khao Lak Weather in December

In our experience, December is the turning point from bad weather to good — a mix of sunshine and the occasional shower.

Scooter day trips and the odd beach day start becoming possible again.

When Is Not a Good Time to Visit Khao Lak?

Rough sea in Khao Lak
For a beach vacation, January through April is the sweet spot — outside that window, the sea can get seriously rough

The worst months to visit Khao Lak are October and November. Heavy rainfall frequently causes flooding, since the drainage systems simply can’t keep up. The sea is too dangerous for swimming, snorkeling, or any water sports.

We visited Khao Lak in October ourselves and it wasn’t quite as bad as we feared — but we wouldn’t deliberately plan a trip there during that time again.

From June onward, conditions get climatically challenging too, as humidity can spike to 90 percent.

January through April is generally the best time to visit Khao Lak — but it comes at a price. It’s peak season, hotels fill up quickly, and the crowds are very much present.

If you’re after peace and quiet, also think twice about visiting in mid-April. That’s when Songkran (Thai New Year) takes over the country. The celebrations last several days, and major cities and resort towns turn into one big street party.
