When Is the Best Time to Visit Indonesia?
Generally, the dry season from May to October is the best time to visit Indonesia. This is especially true for the most popular destinations like Bali, Java, Lombok, and Flores.
Our tip: We especially recommend May and October — the highlights of Indonesia are far less crowded than during peak season from June to September.
You can also travel to Indonesia during the rainy season without too much trouble — even then, it usually only rains in the afternoon. That said, we’d avoid the rainiest months of January and February.
Since Indonesia spans so many islands, the best time to visit different parts of the country varies quite a bit.
That’s why we’ve broken down the climate region by region below.
The Best Time to Visit Indonesia by Island, with Climate Charts
We’ve put together climate charts for the largest and most popular islands in Indonesia so you can get a clear picture of what the weather looks like throughout the year.

Climate Chart for Bali, Java, Lombok, Flores

The best time to visit Bali applies almost one-to-one to Lombok, Java, and Flores. For all four islands, the sweet spot is the dry season from May to October.
That’s also why you can easily combine them on a road trip through Indonesia.
Personally, we love the shoulder months of April, May, and October–November. Rain is only occasional, and the crowds are noticeably thinner.
Climate Chart for Borneo and Papua

Borneo has a climate similar to Bali. You can also use this chart as a guide for Papua and the smaller surrounding islands.
The best time to visit Borneo and Papua is from April to October.
Climate Chart for Sumatra

Sumatra is Indonesia’s largest island, and the weather here varies depending on where you are. Generally, the best time to go is from February to August — that’s when rainfall is at its lowest.
Climate Chart for Sulawesi

The best time to visit Sulawesi is between June and October — the dry season on the island. Keep in mind that conditions here also vary a bit by region.
Personal Tips for the Rainy Season in Indonesia
Traveling to Indonesia during the rainy season is absolutely doable. Most of the time it only rains in the afternoon for a few hours at most, and mornings are often sunny.
The upside? During the rainy season there’s less going on and prices are often lower. Just plan your activities for the morning and you’ll be fine.
If you’re doing a lot of hiking, though, we’d steer clear of the peak rainy season (December–February). Heavy rain makes trails genuinely dangerous, and some routes like the Mount Rinjani trek on Lombok are even closed during that period.
