Our Recommendation: The Best Time to Visit Fuerteventura
We love October and November on Fuerteventura. For us, these two months are the best time to visit Fuerteventura.
The weather is still fantastic, temperatures average a pleasant 77°F (25°C), and you can absolutely still go swimming.
We once took a boat tour in Fuerteventura in November — specifically a snorkeling trip to Lobos Island — and had some truly incredible snorkeling in the Atlantic.
On top of that, October and November are no longer as crowded, and the island isn’t packed yet. Most visitors show up in August and December.
We also love January through March as a travel window — it’s the perfect escape from winter back home. April through June, on the other hand, tends to be the quietest period on the island.
That said, the weather on Fuerteventura is genuinely good year-round. In summer, temperatures have been known to climb above 104°F (40°C) in recent years.
Fuerteventura's Climate at a Glance
The Canary Islands are often called the “Islands of Eternal Spring” — and it’s a title that really fits. It truly never gets cold here, and Fuerteventura is no exception.
In winter, it’s still an average of 59°F (15°C) and a thick hoodie is all you need. In summer, it gets genuinely hot, with temperatures in the 86°F (30°C) range and well above.

Special Conditions: Wind and Calima on Fuerteventura
Before you plan your trip to Fuerteventura, there are two weather phenomena worth knowing about: wind and calima.
How Windy Is It on Fuerteventura?
Very windy! Fuerteventura is generally the windiest of all the Canary Islands.
There is a clear pattern though: winter is less windy than summer. And in summer, we’re often actually grateful for the breeze — without it, the sun would be simply unbearable.
How much wind you notice also depends on which part of Fuerteventura you’re staying in. The west coast is rougher and windier than the east coast.
What Is Calima?
Calima is a weather phenomenon that occurs mainly in summer. It’s essentially a sandstorm in which a particular thermal pattern carries sand from the Sahara — from places like Morocco — all the way over to Fuerteventura.
The wind isn’t strong, so “sandstorm” isn’t quite the right word. It’s more like a super warm breeze — a bit like someone constantly holding a hair dryer in your face.
The air turns very hazy and can take on a distinct yellow tint from the sand. During a strong calima, sunsets disappear entirely. Many people also get headaches — just a heads-up so you’re not caught off guard.
Weather on Fuerteventura in September, October, and November
Fall is our favorite season on the island. In September, October, and November, temperatures average a lovely 77°F (25°C).
The ocean is still warm from summer, so swimming is absolutely on the table. And there’s a big bonus: there’s much less wind than in summer.
For us, these months have a very special charm — the island is wonderfully quiet and the weather can be genuinely dreamy week after week.
If you want to do a bit of everything — exploring the top highlights of Fuerteventura, hiking, or just chilling on the beach — this is the best time to visit Fuerteventura.
The main downside of fall? Sudden rain showers that can sometimes last a whole week. Even so, rain is still fairly rare on Fuerteventura overall.
Weather on Fuerteventura in December, January, and February
Winter on Fuerteventura is great if you need an escape from gray skies back home. Even between December and February, it stays relatively mild at around 68°F (20°C).
Full beach days are rare, but during the day you can easily walk around in shorts and a T-shirt, and in the evenings a thick hoodie does the trick. The sun shines on almost every day.
Winter has two big advantages: first, there’s less wind. Second, it’s the off-season, which means flights are genuinely cheap — and you can find some great hotel deals too.
If you’re an intermediate or advanced surfer, winter is your season. That’s when strong Atlantic swells roll in and the waves get big. The reduced wind also means cleaner, more beautiful wave breaks.
Weather on Fuerteventura in March, April, and May
Spring is very similar to fall — just a little cooler and with fewer rainy days. Highs range between 72°F and 75°F (22–24°C).
The Atlantic can still feel a bit cool for some, but if you don’t get cold easily, you can definitely head into the ocean — ideally at the most beautiful beaches Fuerteventura has to offer.
Spring is also perfect for a mix of sightseeing and beach time. The conditions are ideal for the best activities on Fuerteventura too.
More good news: spring sees the fewest tourists, there’s hardly any calima, and the sunsets can be seriously stunning.
Weather on Fuerteventura in June, July, and August
June through August on Fuerteventura is made for true sun worshippers. On many days, temperatures hit up to 95°F (35°C) — and in recent years, even above 104°F (40°C).
Summer is best suited for those who want to park themselves at their beachfront hotel on Fuerteventura and soak it all in. The ocean is beautifully warm too.
That said, summer does come with real downsides: it’s peak season, so everything costs noticeably more and the beaches fill up fast.
Calima occurs almost daily. And it’s also the season with the strongest winds — gusts of up to 25 mph (40 km/h) at times.
Some people actually love the wind though: for kite and windsurfers, summer is the best time to go to Fuerteventura. Especially in the south of the island (Risco del Paso, Sotavento), conditions are perfect for all wind sports.
And if you want to learn to surf on Fuerteventura, June to August works great too. The smaller, gentler waves are ideal for beginner courses.
Best Time to Visit by Activity
When to visit Fuerteventura also depends a lot on what you actually want to do. Here’s a quick breakdown of which months work best for different plans.

July and August have the highest temperatures and the calmest ocean — meaning more of Fuerteventura’s beaches are suitable for swimming than at other times of year. - For hiking:
For outdoor activities like hiking and cycling, the shoulder months of March, April, October, and November are your best bet — calima eases up and it’s not quite as hot. - For surfing:
Between November and February, the waves are the biggest and most beautiful, with relatively little wind — ideal for more experienced surfers. Beginners are better off with the smaller summer waves from June through August. - For windsurfing and kitesurfing:
The strongest and most consistent winds blow in summer between June and August. That’s when the south of Fuerteventura is particularly perfect for all wind sports. - For sightseeing:

Best Time to Visit Fuerteventura with Kids
Good news: you can visit Fuerteventura with kids any time of year and have a fantastic trip. So don’t stress if you’re tied to the school calendar.
Our top pick is the fall break. As we mentioned, October and the surrounding months are our favorite time to visit Fuerteventura.
It’s still pleasantly warm but not too hot for the kids. And you get to choose between relaxing at your family hotel on Fuerteventura or heading out on some fun day trips.
Spring and Easter break are a great option too — especially for younger children, since the sun isn’t as intense yet.
During the summer break, it can get too hot, crowded, and expensive. And if you’re visiting in the winter months with kids, make sure to look for a hotel with a heated pool.

Best Time to Visit Fuerteventura for Budget Travelers
Traveling outside of peak season can definitely save you money — though flights and hotels tend to be cheapest at different times of year.
Many accommodations — including the most beautiful boutique hotels on Fuerteventura and the best adults-only hotels on Fuerteventura — are cheaper in April, May, and June than during the rest of the year.
So if an affordable place to stay is a top priority, those months are a smart time to go.
The cheapest flights right now tend to fall in November, December, and January — with budget airlines offering round trips from around $65 (60 euros), carry-on luggage only.
Flight prices in May are also pretty reasonable, with round trips starting at around $130 (120 euros). Since many hotels are cheaper that month too, May is the sweet spot for bargain hunters.
