For a really good overview, we’ll first explain what the climate in Crete is like and walk you through a super helpful Crete climate chart.

What is the climate like in Crete?

The climate in Crete is Mediterranean, with an incredible amount of sunshine. Along with Cyprus, Crete is considered the sunniest island in the Mediterranean.

In July, the sun shines the most — on average up to 12 hours a day. In December, it shines the least, only about 4 hours a day.

December is also the month with the most rainfall. In contrast, summer is bone dry. In July and August, it sometimes doesn’t rain at all.

Temperatures are mostly very pleasant year-round. In winter, the average is 55°F, and in summer it’s 82°F. In midsummer, though, it can now reach over 86°F and get seriously hot.

The sun usually shines six to nine hours a day. In winter, Crete gets by far the most rain. January averages around 10 rainy days per month.

The weather in Crete in February

The weather in February in Crete is about the same as January. Both months are therefore not among the best times to visit Crete.

What is pretty cool about these months, though: the White Mountains of Crete are almost always covered in a beautiful blanket of snow.

The weather in Crete in March

In March, it’s already a bit warmer. Temperatures in Crete are around 63°F by then. The sun shines about six to nine hours a day, just like in the first two months.

But the rain tapers off. On average, it only rains about five to seven days in March. There are often already the first hints of summer in March.

The weather in Crete in April

Crete really comes alive in April. The weather is already genuinely beautiful. Average temperatures in Crete climb above 68°F for the first time.

The weather in Crete in May

May in Crete is absolutely worth it. It’s the first month with truly great weather. Temperatures average a very pleasant 75°F.

The sun really does shine more than 10 hours a day, and in May it should barely rain at all. Starting in May, however, hotel prices in Crete also start to climb.

The weather in June in Crete is really great. For us, it’s the best time to visit Crete. Just like in May, the sun shines virtually nonstop and it barely rains at all.

Average temperatures in Crete in June are around 84°F. For us, that’s perfect beach weather. Some days are a bit cooler, though, so you can also fit in plenty of sightseeing this month.

The sun typically shines all day and it almost never rains. There are exceptions, of course, and your July vacation in Crete can sometimes be cooler too.

The weather in Crete in August

Chania in August in Crete
We visited Crete in August and did a lot of sightseeing despite the heat. It was probably a bit exhausting, though.

The weather in August in Crete is pretty much the same as July. We also visited Crete in August and hit a very hot week with temperatures up to 108°F.

We mostly spent the mornings and midday at the pool or on the beach. By late afternoon, it felt more comfortable — that’s the time to head out and see some of the sights.

The weather in Crete in September

A vacation in Crete is also really worthwhile in September. The sun still shines all day and it still barely rains at all.

Temperatures are already slowly dropping, but at around 81°F they’re still really lovely.

The weather in Crete in October

Crete in October
In October you can clearly tell it’s the off-season. But the weather in Crete, at 75°F with plenty of sunshine, is still really lovely.

If you can’t handle the summer heat, you should seriously consider a vacation in October. The weather in Crete is really pleasant then.

Temperatures are around 75°F, but after the hot summer it always feels a bit warmer than that. The sun still shines more than 10 hours every day.

It might rain a little again on two to four days in October, but really not much. That said, in recent years there have been more and more severe autumn storms in Crete.

The weather in Crete in November

In November, temperatures in Crete drop back below 68°F. The average is 66°F. The sun shines a bit less and it rains on up to 7 days per month.

The sea is sometimes still so warm that you can even take a dip in the ocean.

In December, the weather in Crete is at its worst. Daytime temperatures max out at around 61°F and the sun averages only 4 hours a day.

December is also the rainiest month in Crete — about 10 rainy days a month on what is otherwise the sunniest island in the Mediterranean. That makes December the worst month for a trip to Crete.

Best time to visit Crete by activity

Depending on which activities you want to do in Crete, we recommend different times of year.

Best time to visit Crete for beach vacations and sightseeing

Elafonissi Beach in Crete
You can combine swimming and sightseeing at Elafonisi Beach. In summer, the weather in Crete here is really great.

The most popular option for a vacation in Crete is probably a mix of beach time and sightseeing. If that’s what you’re after, we recommend the months of June, September, and October.

During these months it’s not quite as hot and you won’t be constantly sweating your way around the highlights of Crete.

At the same time, the sea is a comfortable temperature and you can relax and soak up the sun on the beach. The weather during this period is also perfect for day trips in Crete.

If you’d mainly like to stay at a hotel right on the beach in Crete, then June, July, and August are the best time to go to Crete.

You can enjoy the sunshine, the water temperatures are fantastic, and there’s almost no rain.

Best time to visit Crete for city trips and sightseeing

The port of Chania in Crete
If you want to do a lot of sightseeing and stroll around Chania, you should avoid midsummer.

If you want to explore the best sights and most beautiful places in Crete, we’d suggest visiting in spring, between April and June, or heading to Crete as a fall destination — meaning September and October.

Our favorite city is Chania, by the way. There you’ll find, for example, the Theta Boutique Hotel. It’s one of the most beautiful boutique hotels in Crete and is genuinely affordable, especially in winter.

Best time to visit Crete for hiking

A woman hiking in the Kourtaliotiko Gorge in Crete
Hiking, like here in the Kourtaliotiko Gorge, should only be done in the off-season. The weather is more pleasant then.

If you want to do a lot of hiking in Crete, we also recommend the months of April through June or September and October.
Avoid hiking through the gorges in the height of summer. We speak from experience when we say it’s truly way too hot then. Not only is it no fun, it’s also extremely dangerous.

Best time to visit Crete for budget travelers

If you’re watching your budget, you should avoid visiting Crete during peak season. Hotel prices in summer in particular can get quite high, and flights to Crete are more expensive too.

If you want to save money, we recommend traveling in the off-season. In spring, you can find real bargains — especially in April, just not around Easter.

In fall, you should fly to Crete at the end of October or in November if you want an affordable trip. Many of the best hotels in Crete offer incredible value for money then.

One example is the Bali Diamond Hotel. It’s one of the most beautiful adults-only hotels in Crete and is located right on the small Bali Bay, which is one of the 11 dream beaches in Crete. Seriously stunning.

In November, however, the hotel selection is no longer quite as large, since many hotels close for their winter break at the end of October.

Best time to visit Crete with kids

If you’re vacationing in Crete with kids, we recommend the months of April, May, and June in spring and September and October in fall.

Especially with little ones, temperatures during these months are the most comfortable, and you can enjoy great activities and day trips with kids in Crete.

We also know that summer vacation usually falls in July and August. Those are still really great months for a beach trip. We strongly recommend booking a hotel with a pool for that time.

Natural disasters in Crete

A storm in Crete
In recent years, severe storms have become more frequent in Crete

Crete can experience earthquakes from time to time. That’s because the African and Eurasian tectonic plates meet in the middle of the Mediterranean — roughly where Crete is located.

The tremors usually measure a maximum of four on the scale, which is not strong. It feels something like a slight vibration underfoot and is completely normal for the locals.

So you don’t need to worry about earthquakes before your trip to Crete.

In recent years, however, severe wildfires and storms have occurred repeatedly throughout Greece.

We ourselves didn’t experience any of it firsthand, but friends of ours were in Crete during the storms in the fall of 2022.

As serious as that natural disaster was, it has fortunately been an exception so far. We’d still say that September and October are among the best times to visit Crete.
