The climate in Cancún is tropical. Temperatures hover around 30°C (86°F) year-round. There are no distinct seasons — instead, the year is divided into a dry season and a rainy season.

During the dry season, it almost never rains. But even during the rainy season, it doesn’t rain every day, and when it does, it’s usually just short, intense showers. Keep in mind, though, that hurricane season in Cancún runs from June through November.
When is the best time to visit Cancún?
For the best weather, the ideal time for a trip to Cancún is the dry season from November through April.

For us personally, the sweet spot is November and December. Temperatures are wonderfully comfortable — not quite as scorching, and it rarely rains. Plus, it’s not yet full peak season on the Yucatán Peninsula, so you’ll have a bit more breathing room.

Weather in Cancún in November and December
We love the weather in November and December — it’s also perfect for a Yucatán road trip. Daytime temperatures sit around 28–29°C (82–84°F), which is great both for sightseeing and for a beach vacation in Mexico. At night, it cools down to around 20°C (68°F), so it’s worth packing a light jacket.
The one downside: the sky is often overcast, and you can’t count on wall-to-wall sunshine every day.
December also marks the start of peak season. Toward the end of the month, as Christmas approaches, Cancún gets seriously busy.
Weather in Cancún in January, February, March, and April
From January through April, Cancún is in peak season with top-notch weather. It almost never rains, but the crowds are at their largest and prices are at their highest.
Temperatures climb higher from month to month. In March and April, you can expect daytime highs of 33–35°C (91–95°F). That’s perfect for a beach vacation in Cancún, but it can get almost too hot for sightseeing.
Weather in Cancún in June, July, August, and September
In June, hurricane season begins in Cancún and the rainy season kicks in. Rain typically falls only in the afternoon as short showers, and even that doesn’t happen every day. Mornings often bring clear skies and sunshine. Overall, though, it’s very hot and humid.
Hurricanes rarely make landfall, but the chances are highest in August and September. You should expect tropical storms and severe weather more frequently during these months.
The upside of going during this period? Lower prices and fewer crowds at the beach and at the major attractions.
Weather in Cancún in May and October
May and October are transitional months. It rains regularly, but not as often as from June through September, and there are fewer crowds compared to peak season.
May isn’t yet hurricane season, but it is very hot. October, on the other hand, is a bit cooler — though it’s still within hurricane season.
Either way, both months are perfectly fine for a trip to Cancún.
Vacations and holidays in Cancún
Most Mexicans take their vacations from late December through March, making this the absolute high season.
Easter, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve are especially popular times to visit Cancún. Expect large crowds and high prices during these periods.
Also worth knowing: Mexico’s most famous festival, Día de los Muertos, falls on November 1st and 2nd. Since Cancún isn’t a major hub for this holiday, it’s not quite as lively here as in other parts of Mexico — but it’s still a fascinating time to be in the country.
