Climate in Argentina: An Overview
Just like in Europe, Argentina has four seasons. Since Argentina is in the Southern Hemisphere, though, they’re reversed from what you’re used to.
- Spring: September, October, and November
- Summer: December, January, and February
- Fall: March, April, and May
- Winter: June, July, and August

The climate in Argentina varies enormously. In the northeast, where Argentina borders Brazil and Paraguay, a tropical climate prevails. This is where the famous Iguazú Falls are located — one of the most popular attractions in Argentina.
The west of Argentina is dominated by the Andes Mountains. The northern and central Andes are characterized by a very dry desert climate.
Between the tropics and the Andes in northern Argentina lies a subtropical zone that can be either very dry or very rainy. This is where the city of Salta is located.
The eastern part of central Argentina enjoys a Mediterranean climate — think of it as similar to the weather in Spain. This is where Buenos Aires and Córdoba are located.
In southern Argentina, the Patagonia region, it gets noticeably colder. Along the Andean border with Chile, rain is more frequent, while the entire eastern south is dry steppe.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Argentina?
We recommend visiting Argentina in fall or spring. The best months to travel are October/November and March/April.
Of course, it depends entirely on which regions you’re planning to explore. Patagonia is best visited during the summer months of November through March, while the Iguazú Falls are actually better in the fall and winter months of April through August.

Argentina in March, April, and May
Fall is our favorite time to travel in Argentina. Why? Because you’ll find great weather conditions across every region, and in the south the landscapes turn seriously stunning shades of red and gold.
If you’re planning a road trip through Argentina, try to start in the south in March, since snowfall begins there shortly after. Then work your way north — March is still quite rainy up there, while April and May are significantly drier.

Argentina in June, July, and August
The winter months are the least ideal for a trip to Argentina — especially if warm weather is what you’re after. That said, if skiing is on your agenda or you’re planning to spend most of your time in the tropics, these months can work well.
Nights get seriously cold across large parts of the country. In the southern Andes, snow blankets everything, and the northern Andes see dramatic swings between day and night temperatures.
Honestly, we wouldn’t travel to Argentina in winter — so many of the best highlights are in the mountain regions, and it’s simply too cold there for our taste.

Argentina in September, October, and November
In spring, temperatures warm up again across much of Argentina, and these months are — just like fall — a great time for a trip to Argentina. It even rains less overall than during March through May.
If you’re heading to Argentina in spring, start in the north. In September and October the weather there is still pleasant, while November brings more heat and more rain.
Central and southern Argentina are better saved for November, when the weather turns noticeably more summer-like.

Argentina in December, January, and February
We don’t recommend a road trip through Argentina in summer — it’s simply too hot for sightseeing in many parts of the country. In major cities like Buenos Aires, the heat can be genuinely unbearable.
Patagonia is the exception and has great weather in summer. The northern Andes region is also worth considering, since you can escape to the cooler mountains. In the lower-lying towns, though, it gets very hot.
We’d skip the tropics in summer due to the heat and humidity. The subtropics are a bit more manageable, but expect a lot of rain.
One more thing to keep in mind: February is peak vacation season for Argentinians. The coast and the mountains get very crowded, and prices rise accordingly.

Public Holidays and Vacation Season in Argentina
Most major holidays in Argentina will be familiar — Christmas, Easter, and so on. Prices tend to creep up in many places during these times.
The same goes for the summer vacation season in February. That month, huge numbers of Argentinians escape the sweltering cities for the coast or the mountains. Many destinations become significantly more crowded, so book your accommodation, flights, and bus tickets well in advance.
Unlike neighboring Brazil, Argentina doesn’t have a Carnival-style event that sends prices through the roof — so that’s one less thing to worry about.
