Mirissa Beach

The most well-known beach and a true highlight in Sri Lanka is Mirissa Beach in the south. No wonder — it’s absolutely stunning. The bay is lined with palm trees, the water is crystal clear, and the sand is incredibly soft. We loved it.
If you’re in the mood to unwind, just stretch out under a palm tree and sip on a coconut. You can also swim in the ocean comfortably, since the waves are usually not too large.
But they’re big enough for beginner surfers. So if you’re feeling more adventurous, grab a surfboard or bodyboard and dive into the waves.
On top of that, many whale watching tours depart from Mirissa. We’ve heard that Raja & the Whales is a great operator that takes the animals’ wellbeing seriously.

Unawatuna Beach

Atmosphere: Carefree and lively, less peace and quiet

Another very popular beach on Sri Lanka’s south coast is Unawatuna Beach, near Galle. The beach sits in a small bay with golden sand and plenty of coconut palms.
This is the right spot if you want a buzzing beach with a lot going on. In the evenings, many beach bars host parties with live music — it’s a real scene.
The waves aren’t too big, making it great for beginner surfers and also perfect for swimming. Another cool feature: there’s a coral reef just offshore where you can spot all kinds of colorful fish while snorkeling or diving — and sometimes even sea turtles.
Our hotel pick: The Horizon Hilltop Villa. Not right on the beach, but perched on a hill with amazing views — and much quieter because of it.
Hiriketiya Beach

Perfect for: Sunbathing, yoga, surfing
Atmosphere: Laid-back vibe

Turquoise water in a small bay, tall palm trees, and hip bars and cafés — that’s what makes Hiriketiya Beach one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka for us.
Unlike Unawatuna, the atmosphere here is much more relaxed. Instead of parties, you’ll find yoga classes on the beach and breathtaking sunsets.
You still won’t be bored, though — the surfing here is excellent, whether you’re a beginner or more advanced. Hiriketiya is also great for swimming, as long as you keep an eye out for the surfers.

Tangalle Beach

Perfect for: Relaxation, beach walks
Atmosphere: Quiet and sometimes nearly deserted

Do you love beaches where you can truly switch off and really unwind? Then Tangalle Beach is the one for you.
This miles-long stretch of coastline is still very unspoiled and has little in the way of infrastructure — just a handful of cafés and bars. The upside: sometimes you really have the whole beach to yourself.
In Tangalle, you’ll not only witness stunning sunsets, but with a bit of luck you might also spot sea turtles that live in this area.
Swimming can be tricky here due to the large waves and strong currents. But the idea of endlessly long beach walks along one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful stretches of coast sounds pretty great too, doesn’t it?

Hikkaduwa Beach
Location: On Sri Lanka’s southwest coast. Open in Google Maps

Atmosphere: Very touristy, lots of beach bars

Hikkaduwa is well known as a place where you can spot sea turtles. There’s a coral reef just offshore where, in addition to turtles, you’ll find countless other marine creatures while snorkeling — it’s seriously impressive underwater.
Important: At Turtle Beach, a section of Hikkaduwa Beach, turtles are lured in with food and tourists handle them — sometimes even holding them in place. Please don’t support this!
The beach is always busy, partly due to the many hotels built along the shoreline. If you want a slightly quieter experience, head to the neighboring Narigama Beach, which is a bit less touristy.

Bentota Beach
Location: On Sri Lanka’s southwest coast. Open in Google Maps

Bentota Beach in the southwest is wonderfully versatile. It’s very expansive, so it never feels too crowded — you can really kick back here. But water sports fans will also have a blast, with water skiing and jet skiing on offer.
If you enjoy snorkeling or diving, the coral reef just offshore is home to all kinds of colorful marine life.
Bentota is also the perfect spot for a family vacation in Sri Lanka. The water is shallow and the sand slopes very gently into the sea, so even the little ones can swim safely.
Good to know for your trip planning: Bentota makes an ideal last beach stop on your Sri Lanka road trip before heading back toward Colombo and the airport. It’s only about 1.5 hours away by car.

Beaches around Trincomalee
Location: On Sri Lanka’s northeast coast. Nilaveli location | Uppuveli location
Perfect for: Families, swimming, relaxing
Atmosphere: Not overcrowded, lots of small restaurants
Best time to visit: May to September
Most visitors to Sri Lanka head straight for the south coast beaches. But honestly, the secluded beaches of the east coast are every bit as impressive — and far less crowded.
The two standout swimming beaches in the east are both near Trincomalee. First up: Nilaveli Beach, 15 kilometers from Trinco. Turquoise-green water, golden sand, and no tourist crowds. What more could you ask for?
Nilaveli is also a great jumping-off point for a trip to Pigeon Island National Park.
The second top beach in the area: Uppuveli Beach, about two kilometers north of Trincomalee. It’s wonderfully spacious and really not overcrowded at all.
At both beaches, the water is shallow and therefore great for kids to swim in.

Arugam Bay Beach

If you’re already on the east coast, you absolutely cannot skip Arugam Bay. It’s considered one of the best surf spots in the world — and it lives up to the hype.
At Arugam Bay Beach, the Baby Point has small, forgiving waves — ideal for beginners. Head a bit further down to the Main Point and you’ll see what real surf pros can do on a board. Seriously impressive!
Our tip: The sand dune at the Main Point is especially cool in the evenings for watching the surfers. We sat there every evening with snacks and drinks, just watching in awe.
If surfing isn’t your thing, you can simply relax on one of the many loungers at the beach bars along Arugam Bay. Swimming is genuinely tough here due to the waves. Your best bet is just before the Baby Point, where the bay narrows a bit — that’s also where many locals swim.

Frequently Asked Questions about Sri Lanka's Beaches
Where are the most beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka?
The best beaches in Sri Lanka are found along the south and southwest coast — six of our top eight picks are there (#1–6).
That said, the east coast has some seriously impressive beaches too, even if there are fewer of them. Our favorites on the east coast are the beaches around Trincomalee (#7) and Arugam Bay (#8).
Is swimming in the ocean dangerous in Sri Lanka?
It depends on where you go. Some beaches in Sri Lanka have quite strong waves and currents, which is something inexperienced swimmers — and especially children — shouldn’t take lightly.

Popular tourist beaches like Mirissa and Unawatuna are generally monitored by lifeguards in our experience.
As for sharks — they do exist in Sri Lanka, but attacks on people are extremely rare. Don’t let that worry you.
Where can you swim safely in Sri Lanka?
The calmest water in Sri Lanka is at Bentota Beach in the southwest and Uppuveli and Nilaveli Beach in the northeast — great for families and less confident swimmers.
At Mirissa, Unawatuna, Hiriketiya, and Hikkaduwa you can swim too, but there are a few waves to deal with. Honestly, that can be a lot of fun!
Swimming is genuinely tough at Arugam Bay and around Tangalle due to strong currents and big surf.
