Good Karma

Best travel time: December to March

Our top pick for a beachfront hotel in Sri Lanka is the Good Karma. It’s located on the south coast in the town of Tangalle, known for its miles of paradise beaches.

The hotel is a little secluded — and that’s exactly the point. The focus is entirely on relaxation: mornings start with a complimentary yoga class, you can book a massage, take long walks on the beach, and above all just leave the stress of everyday life behind.

That’s exactly what a beach vacation should feel like. You spend the whole day in your swimsuit, dipping in and out of the waves. In Tangalle you’ve almost always got surf, so you’ll never get bored in the water.

And if you feel like doing something else, the hotel manager can arrange an excursion to the best attractions in Sri Lanka.

Pallikaduwa Beach in Tangalle

Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort

Best travel time: December to March

It gets even more luxurious in Tangalle — at the 5-star resort Anantara Peace Haven. Exactly the right place to treat yourself during your beach vacation in Sri Lanka.

At the Anantara, you won’t be lacking a single thing. Pure relaxation at the spa, fitness in the gym, a personal concierge for every room — yep, you get it all.

The only decision you’ll need to make here is whether to spend the day at the huge hotel pool or at the beautiful private beach. There are worse problems to have, right?

Bentota Beach

Cinnamon Bentota Beach

Best travel time: December to March

Looking for one of the best beach hotels in Sri Lanka that’s also family-friendly? Then we’d point you straight to the Cinnamon Bentota Beach Hotel on the southwest coast.

Kids are really well looked after at the kids’ club and can run wild on the hotel’s own children’s playground. You can genuinely tell that all the staff are excellently trained in working with families.

The beach in front of the hotel has fine sand and a gentle slope, making it great for swimming with little ones most of the time. Why most of the time? Because there are occasionally slightly bigger waves here, so you’ll want to keep an eye out.

But it’s not just the beach — the rest of the property is seriously impressive too. We’ve rarely seen such a beautiful garden and pool landscape. And because it’s quite large, it never actually feels crowded.

Arugam Bay Beach

The Spice Trail

Best travel time: May to September

Another popular beach destination in Sri Lanka — especially for surfing — is Arugam Bay. But even if you just want to relax, this spot on the east coast is a great choice.

The Spice Trail is only 70 meters from Arugam Bay Beach. Perfect for a laid-back beach day or when you want to hit the waves fast!

The center of Arugam Bay is also close by: here you’ll find the classic surfer vibe with charming cafés, restaurants, and shops.

What makes The Spice Trail stand out is that the rooms have their own small private garden — super cozy and practical. Plus there’s a large hotel garden with a great pool!

Mirissa Beach

THE SLOW vegan hotel

Best travel time: December to March

Want your Sri Lanka beach hotel to be a little more unique and individual? THE SLOW vegan hotel in Mirissa on the south coast has a truly special food concept. Because — as the name suggests — they serve only vegan food.

Not vegan? Don’t let that put you off — the dishes are seriously delicious.

And for devoted breakfast lovers like us, the best part is this: you can order anything you like from the breakfast menu and eat as much as you want. Hours of all-you-can-eat brunching on the beach — how cool is that?!

In all the breakfast excitement, we mustn’t forget the beach itself. THE SLOW sits in a stunning bay with a private beach. Within just a few minutes on foot you’re at the lively Mirissa Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka in our opinion.

The stylish bohemian-chic decor rounds off the feel-good atmosphere perfectly. It all just comes together!

Hiriketiya Beach in Dikwella

Haven Beach Hiriketiya

Best travel time: December to March

Speaking of beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka — we’ve got another one up our sleeve: Hiriketiya Beach near Dikwella, also in the south. It’s not quite as well known as Mirissa, but absolutely worth a visit.

Our favorite among the beachfront hotels at Hiriketiya Beach is the Haven Beach Hotel. It’s located at the end of the bay, right in the middle of the action. In just a few steps you’ll find countless hip bars, restaurants, and cafés.

The bay with its turquoise water is great for relaxed swimming, and beginner surfers will love it too.

After a day on the beach, you head back to your modern, cozy room — either with a great ocean view or a cool view into the jungle, where you can watch monkeys jumping around.

Pasikuda Beach

Amaya Beach Passikudah

Best travel time: May to September

Looking for a stylish hotel on the east coast? The Amaya Beach is the Sri Lanka beachfront hotel for you.

We spent one night here during our Sri Lanka road trip and honestly could have stayed much longer.

We especially loved the ultra-modern rooms and the spacious, lush hotel grounds. You can relax on a sun lounger under the palm trees or burn some energy on the beach volleyball court.

The hotel sits on the well-known Pasikuda Beach. The hotel’s own stretch of beach has coral reefs and small rocks in the water where plenty of fish hang out — perfect for snorkeling!

Prefer swimming over snorkeling? Just walk a little further to the left to the public beach section.

Dutch Bay Beach in Trincomalee

Trinco Beach by DSK

Best travel time: May to September

If the east coast is calling but you value coziness over luxury, the Trinco Beach in Trincomalee is the Sri Lanka beach resort for you.

The rooms are decorated with real attention to detail and have a very special charm. The blue accents instantly put you in a good mood — but the best thing about the rooms is the stunning ocean view.

Step out of the hotel and you’re right on the deserted beach. The water is crystal clear and perfect for swimming.

Afterward, you just sink into one of the big, cozy bean bag chairs in the sand. Absolutely dreamy!

Kappalady Lagoon in Kalpitiya

Elements Beach & Nature Resort

Best travel time: December to March

Last but not least, we have one more truly special find among the best beach hotels in Sri Lanka: the Elements Beach & Nature Resort.

It’s located on the west coast in Kalpitiya, between the Kappalady Lagoon and the open sea. The area is still fairly unknown — a genuine under-the-radar pick in Sri Lanka.

Everything here is very close to nature: the property is kept completely natural and blends perfectly into its surroundings. You sleep either in a bungalow or a cabana — a small wooden hut in treehouse style. Incredibly special!

You’ll practically have the beach to yourself since there are very few hotels nearby. And you won’t get bored, because there are plenty of cool activities on offer. Rent a SUP and paddle across the lagoon, or take a kitesurfing lesson.

Or how about a boat tour to spot whales and dolphins? Kids find that totally exciting too — just like the many animals that live on and around the resort, such as horses and wild donkeys.

Frequently Asked Questions About Beachfront Hotels in Sri Lanka

Which beach hotel in Sri Lanka offers the best value for money?

In our opinion, the Sri Lanka beach hotel with the absolute best value for money is Good Karma in Tangalle.

There’s truly nothing missing — it has a pool, a spa, and very spacious rooms, yet it’s not overpriced.

And the surcharge for the villa with a private pool isn’t too steep either.

Among the beach hotels in Sri Lanka that are a bit less remote, we think The Lucky Elephant offers the best bang for your buck.

What hotel gives you the best access to the airport?

The closest hotel to Sri Lanka’s airport, at about a 1.5-hour drive, is the Cinnamon Bentota Beach.

It’s a great choice as either your first or last stop on your trip.

We’d lean toward saving it for last, so you can enjoy your beach time in Sri Lanka at the end of your trip — that way you can explore the culture and nature inland first.

Which hotel is best for families with children?

With its kids’ club and playground, the Cinnamon Bentota Beach is the beachfront hotel in Sri Lanka best suited for vacations with kids.

If your children love spending the whole day out in nature, the Elements Beach & Nature Resort is a perfect fit. And sleeping in a treehouse cabana there is, of course, incredibly exciting.

Can I book a beachfront hotel in Sri Lanka during monsoon season?

Monsoon season isn’t the best time to visit Sri Lanka if a beach vacation is your goal.

It doesn’t rain all day, but showers are far from rare — and when they come, they come down hard. If you can’t make full use of your hotel’s beach and pool, that’s a real shame.

You might get lucky, of course, but that’s hard to predict.

If you’re doing a round trip across the island, we’d recommend planning your beach days along the coastline that is not experiencing monsoon season at that time.
