Berat Castle
What do you need to know? From Berat Castle you get the best views over the city and the surrounding landscape. You can also wander through the old castle walls and discover hidden corners. Admission is free. You can hike up on foot or drive up and walk just the last stretch from the parking lot.
Is it worth it? Absolutely! The views are seriously stunning, and Berat Castle is without a doubt a must-see when visiting Berat.
Our tip: If you’re up for a walk, we’d recommend hiking up to the castle and parking further away. You’ll save on parking fees, and Berat is small enough to explore the whole city on foot in a single day.
Historic Neighborhoods in Berat
What do you need to know? Berat has two really beautiful old-town neighborhoods: Mangalem and Gorica. Mangalem is the Ottoman quarter, sitting right below the castle and home to many mosques. Gorica lies on the other side of the river and has more of a Christian character. With its narrow alleyways, it’s absolutely charming — and honestly, it won us over just a little bit more.
Is it worth it? Oh yes! Both neighborhoods are totally worth seeing, and we’d strongly recommend checking out both.
Our tip: A really lovely spot in Gorica is Amalia Homemade Food. We only walked past it because it was too early in the morning — but if you’re there at the right time, definitely stop in.
Gorica Bridge
What do you need to know? The Gorica Bridge connects the two banks of the river and is a genuine piece of history. The stone bridge was built in the 18th century — though a wooden bridge already stood here before that. Today it’s a great spot for photos of the bridge itself and the Osumi River, as well as the surrounding architecture.
Is it worth it? Yes. Since the bridge sits right in the heart of Berat, you should definitely stroll over to it. That said, we found the other highlights in Berat more impressive.
Our tip: A few hundred meters from the Gorica Bridge, there’s a newer bridge crossing the river. We recommend walking across one bridge to the Gorica neighborhood and heading back via the other.
Churches & Mosques in Berat
What do you need to know? Mosques and churches are scattered throughout Berat — most residents belong to Islam or the Eastern Orthodox Church. The largest mosque is the King’s Mosque. Not far from it stands the Orthodox Saint Demetrius Cathedral.
Is it worth it? It’s okay. You’ll pass plenty of churches and mosques on a walk through Berat, but we didn’t find them super impressive. The Grand Mosque in Tirana, for example, left a much bigger impression on us.
Day Trip from Berat: Osumi Canyon
What do you need to know? About 50 kilometers south of Berat lies the Osumi Canyon — Albania’s answer to the Grand Canyon. If you’re spending a few nights in Berat, it makes a fantastic day trip. A road runs along the Osumi River all the way to the canyon, with great views the whole way.
Is it worth it? Absolutely! The Osumi Canyon is a seriously impressive nature destination. You can go on great hikes and even try rafting on the river.
Our tip: Near the Osumi Canyon you’ll also find the popular Bogovë Waterfall, which pairs perfectly with the excursion.

Getting to Berat
We recommend doing a road trip through Albania with a rental car — it’s the most flexible and quickest way to reach Berat. From Tirana Airport it’s less than two hours by car.

Alternatively, buses run to Berat as well. From Tirana the journey takes three hours. Buses run daily roughly every half hour and a ticket costs 500 Lek (5 euros).
You can find the bus terminal in Tirana on Google Maps under South and North Albania Bus Terminal. Local buses connect it to the city center, and the routes are shown on Google Maps.
The bus terminal in Berat is about three kilometers outside the old town: open in Google Maps. From there, you’ll need to grab a taxi or walk into the center.
