Correfoc - Festes de la Mercè

The La Mercè festival is celebrated every year on September 24th in honor of the city’s patron saint of the same name. It’s the most colorful and, with over 500 events, the biggest festival in Barcelona.
A true highlight for photography fans is the Correfoc — the procession of fire-breathing dragons. The parade kicks off at dusk, with participants dressed as devils and dragons putting on a spectacular fire show.
But be warned: Spectators on the sidelines are often pulled into the action — it’s all part of the fun to chase them with spark-throwing pitchforks, for example.
If that sounds a bit too wild for you, it’s best to keep some distance. For everyone else: better skip the flammable clothing!
Photo tip: If you’re feeling brave, you can step right into the procession and get some great close-up shots. Tripods aren’t very useful here since everything moves so fast and you’ll need to work with short shutter speeds anyway.
Getting there & location
The Correfoc takes place along Via Laietana and the surrounding streets in the center of Barcelona. The nearest metro station is Jaume I (L4, yellow line), located right on Via Laietana.
Port Vell

Port Vell is the oldest part of Barcelona’s harbor and a popular leisure district. You can take a leisurely stroll along the beautiful waterfront promenade or visit the Maremagnum shopping center and the aquarium.
When you need a break, grab a seat at one of the many great restaurants or cafés by the water.

Photo tip: Evening is the best time to shoot here. As the sun sets, the light reflects beautifully on the water — seriously stunning golden-hour shots.
Getting there & location
Port Vell is located in the center of Barcelona, at the end of the famous promenade La Rambla. You can easily reach it on foot or by metro — Drassanes station (L3, green line) is just a few minutes away.
Harbor Cable Car

Barcelona has several cable cars that take you up to the city hill of Montjuïc. One of them is the harbor cable car with its eye-catching red gondolas.
It departs from Port Vell, and during the ride you’ll have a fantastic view of the harbor, the old town, and the sea.
Photo tip: From inside the gondola you can photograph the city and the harbor from a truly unique perspective. But the cable car itself also makes a great subject — especially with Port Vell in the background.

The harbor cable car departs from the Torre de San Sebastián station at Port Vell. The nearest metro station is Drassanes (L3, green line).
Hotel W Barcelona

The W Barcelona is definitely one of the most striking hotels in Barcelona. The futuristic building shaped like a sail was designed by world-renowned architect Ricardo Bofill.
It stands out dramatically from Barcelona’s skyline and is considered one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks.
But this five-star hotel isn’t just a great photography spot. If you want to treat yourself, you can also stay here in great luxury — the views of the sea and the city from the upper floors are absolutely breathtaking.

Photo tip: The hotel looks especially impressive against the sea at sunset — one of the best Instagram spots in Barcelona if you time it right.
Getting there & location
The W Barcelona is located on Barceloneta beach, at the end of the promenade. Take the metro to Barceloneta (L4, yellow line) and then walk about 20 minutes along the waterfront.
Palau Nacional

With its towers and domes, the Palau Nacional looks almost like a castle. In reality, it houses one of the absolute top museums in Barcelona: the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC).
The building is a fantastic place to take photos in Barcelona — both during the day and in the evening when it’s beautifully illuminated.
Photo tip: Try standing directly in front of the Palau. From here you look out over the Magic Fountain in front of Plaça d’Espanya, where a light and water show takes place in the evenings. Behind it, Mount Tibidabo rises up in the distance — a seriously dramatic backdrop.
Getting there & location
The Palau Nacional is located at the foot of Montjuïc, which is easy to reach by Barcelona’s public transit. Take the metro to Espanya station, a central transportation hub served by lines L1 (red line) and L3 (green line). From there it’s just a short walk.
Olympic Park

Higher up on Montjuïc hill lies another great Barcelona photography spot: the Olympic Park. It was the venue for the 1992 Olympic Games.
The buildings where the Games were held are still standing today — including the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium, which hosted the track and field events as well as the grand opening and closing ceremonies.
The most iconic photo subject in the Olympic Park, though, is the 136-meter-tall Torre Calatrava, also known as Torre Telefònica — a striking telecommunications tower that looks incredible against a clear sky.
Photo tip: Take your time strolling around the grounds and discovering the most interesting subjects. You also get a really great view of the city from up here — perfect for wide-angle shots.
Getting there & location
From the Palau Nacional at the foot of Montjuïc, it’s about a ten-minute walk to the Olympic Park — making it super easy to combine two of Barcelona’s best photo spots in one outing. Alternatively, take a local bus (e.g. line 55) or Barcelona’s hop-on/hop-off buses from the city center.
Park Güell

Park Güell is one of the absolute top attractions in Barcelona and is even a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The park was designed by the legendary architect Antoni Gaudí, originally as a commissioned project for an industrialist — and it shows. Every corner feels like something out of a fairy tale.
Throughout the park you’ll find structures decorated with colorful mosaics that are perfect for detail shots. The two little houses at the entrance are among the most photographed subjects in the entire city.
Since Park Güell sits on a hill, you also get a wonderful panorama of Barcelona and even the sea from up top.
Photo tip: Park Güell is busy year-round — this is one of the best photo spots in Barcelona, so everyone knows about it. If you want to shoot without crowds, visit early in the morning, especially if you’re only in Barcelona for a weekend.

Getting there & location
Park Güell is located in the Gràcia neighborhood, northwest of Barcelona’s city center. The best way to get there is by taking the green metro line L3 to Lesseps station, or bus line 24 to Travessera de Dalt station. From either stop, it’s a ten to 20-minute walk to the park’s main entrance.
Casa Batlló

Casa Batlló is also one of the most famous works by Antoni Gaudí. The former residential building with its colorful facade was built in 1877 and — just like Park Güell — is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Photo tip: The facade of Casa Batlló is of course an absolute standout for exterior shots — one of the most recognizable where to take photos in Barcelona moments. But inside you’ll find plenty of exciting subjects too. The colorful staircase and the view from the rooftop offer great perspectives for truly creative shots.

Casa Batlló is located in the center of Barcelona, on the famous shopping boulevard Passeig de Gràcia. Just a few minutes’ walk away is the metro station of the same name, served by lines L2 (purple), L3 (green), and L4 (yellow).
Mirador de l'Arrabassada

This wonderful viewpoint is located along the Carretera de l’Arrabassada road at a small rest area. From here you have a great view of the city, the coastline, and the lush surrounding countryside.
Photo tip: The best shots are taken on a clear evening during the blue hour — the time just after sunset when the sky glows in deep shades of blue and the city lights come alive. An absolutely magical atmosphere, and honestly one of the most underrated Barcelona photography spots.
Getting there & location
The viewpoint is on the outskirts of Barcelona — right along the road that winds from the city toward Tibidabo. It’s easily accessible by car, but a short hike from Barcelona is also well worth it.

Note: Normally you can park right at the Mirador. However, access to the rest area has recently been blocked. Unfortunately we don’t know if or when it will reopen.
