Extra Tip: Our Hotels Right by a Train Station in Bangkok
In July 2025, we spent a day in Bangkok. We flew in from Phnom Penh, Cambodia in the evening (we’d spent a few days beforehand at Angkor Wat).
Since our return flight wasn’t until 11 PM the next day, we decided against staying near Suvarnabhumi Airport.
We wanted to stay in the city so we could do a cool tour of Bangkok and eat a really delicious Pad Thai — our favorite dish in Thailand.
We’ve done this quite a few times. Our favorite area is along Sukhumvit Road, because that’s exactly where the Airport Rail Link runs — one of the cheapest and fastest ways of getting from Bangkok’s airport into the city.

Daraya Hostel
Distance to Phaya Thai train station: 15 minutes on foot
In July 2025, we stayed one night at the Daraya Hostel and felt right at home. We slept in one of the hostel beds, but there are also nice private rooms with an en-suite bathroom.
The whole place is spotlessly clean, the included breakfast is genuinely delicious, and the owner is incredibly warm and welcoming. We were even allowed to use our bed and shower until 6 PM — super generous.
There are plenty of restaurants all around. Our top pick is the Jasmine Siam Kitchen Restaurant — so good! The popular MBK Shopping Center is less than a 20-minute walk away.
Maitria Mode Sukhumvit
Distance to Makkasan train station: 20 minutes on foot
A step up in style is the Maitria Mode Sukhumvit, with modern and very stylish rooms. The absolute highlight, though, is the rooftop pool with a stunning panorama over Bangkok.
A delicious breakfast is included. From the hotel, you can quickly reach Lumphini Park or the Vanilla Sky Rooftop Bar by Grab or tuk-tuk — two of our favorite under-the-radar spots in Bangkok.
The location is great all around. It’s a 20-minute walk to the Airport Rail Link stop, but the hotel runs a free tuk-tuk service — not just to the train station, but also to the nearest shopping mall.
The Best Bangkok Hotels Near Don Mueang Airport (DMK)
Flying out of Don Mueang is more common than you might think — especially if your trip through Southeast Asia continues onward.
That was the case for us when we flew from Bangkok to Luang Prabang in Laos. We stayed at a hotel near Don Mueang the night before.
From Don Mueang, by the way, it takes about an hour by bus to get into the city. We did that too for a boat tour in Bangkok.

We stayed here for two nights and felt very comfortable. The bed was cozy and the shared bathroom was spotlessly clean. Breakfast is technically included, but it’s just a simple noodle soup.
Our tips: The food at the Classic Room Restaurant is delicious, and the massage at the Salon Mekalai Thai Massage was really excellent. Both are practically just around the corner.
Airport Mini Hostel at Don Muang Airport

Another great-value pick near the airport is the Airport Mini Hostel. You stay in cozy, compact rooms with a private bathroom.

What to Look for When Booking Your Bangkok Airport Hotel
Staying near Bangkok’s airport makes a lot of sense in a few situations — for example, if you’ve just finished a road trip through Thailand with your last few days in Chiang Mai or around Koh Samui or Phuket.
In that case, you can fly back into Bangkok the evening before your return flight and spend the night close to the terminal.
It also makes sense if you’ve already spent your last few days doing sightseeing in Bangkok but your flight home is very early.
Before you book, here are four things to keep in mind:
- If you have a night between two flights: absolutely make sure to check which airport you’re arriving at and which one you’re departing from. It’s easiest to sleep near the airport you’re flying out of.
- Pay attention to how far the hotel is from the airport. We prefer walking distance — otherwise you’ll need to factor in a Grab ride. Check the distance ahead of time on Google Maps, one of our favorite travel apps. Even better: some hotels offer a free shuttle.
- Also check Google Maps for nearby restaurants around your chosen hotel. It would be a shame to need a taxi just to get dinner.
- Check whether breakfast is included. Especially if you’re flying in the morning, a proper breakfast is worth its weight in gold — airport food is expensive, even in Thailand.

Questions and Tips About Bangkok Airport Hotels
Is it okay to sleep overnight at the airport in Bangkok?
Yes, you can sleep overnight at both Bangkok airports without booking a hotel. Both Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK) are open 24/7 and have quieter seating areas where travelers often spend the night.
It’s not prohibited, but it can be bright, chilly, and noisy — a sleep mask, jacket, and earplugs will come in handy.
Are there sleep pods at Bangkok Airport?
Yes! Both airports offer sleep pods right in the terminal. At Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), you’ll find the Boxtel Hotel and the Avagard Capsule Hotel in the basement — great for a few hours of sleep with a bed, Wi-Fi, and air conditioning.
At Don Mueang Airport (DMK), the Sleep Box by Miracle in Terminal 2 (4th floor) is bookable by the hour or for the whole night. All options are comfortable, but come with a fee.
Can you shower at Bangkok Airport?
Yes, you can shower at both airports — though not for free in the public areas. At Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), lounges like the Miracle Lounge or Coral Lounge offer showers for a fee or with lounge access.
At Don Mueang Airport (DMK), showers are available in lounges or at the Sleep Box by Miracle, where a private bathroom is included. Public showers without a lounge or room booking aren’t available at either airport.
How long does it take to get from Bangkok Airport to the city center?
From Suvarnabhumi (BKK), the Airport Rail Link gets you to the city center in about 25 to 30 minutes — much faster than a taxi in traffic. Taxis or Grab take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes depending on traffic.
From Don Mueang (DMK), the taxi ride also takes 30 to 60 minutes, while shuttle buses take 45 to 90 minutes.

Which Bangkok airport has better connections to the city?
Suvarnabhumi (BKK) wins easily — it has a direct rail link into the city. With the Airport Rail Link, you can reach the center (e.g., Phaya Thai) in just 25 to 30 minutes. It’s fast, affordable (around 45 Baht), and completely traffic-free.
Don Mueang (DMK) has no rail connection. You’re dependent on a taxi, bus, or shuttle, which can take significantly longer depending on traffic. Bottom line: BKK is considerably easier and more reliably accessible.
How early should you arrive at Bangkok Airport?
For international flights at Suvarnabhumi (BKK), plan to arrive at least three hours before departure — you’ll need time for check-in, security, and potential crowds.
For domestic flights at Don Mueang (DMK), two hours is usually enough, since things tend to move faster there. During peak travel periods, add some extra buffer — both airports are large and busy, and wait times can vary.
