Honestly? It depends. Personally, we’d go with the metro and walking in Athens — but the hop-on/hop-off bus does have real advantages:
- You see more from the bus than you ever would from the metro.
- You skip some of the longer walks between attractions.
- The beach line is a great way to get to the sea.
So if you’re not keen on a lot of walking and want a beach day in the mix, the hop-on/hop-off is definitely worth it.
Our Experience with the Athens Hop-on/Hop-off Bus
We’ll be honest — the buses weren’t as well organized as we’d hoped. On our Athens city trip, we rode the yellow hop-on/hop-off bus.
We spent two days in Athens in March and booked the 48h combo ticket with the Acropolis through GetYourGuide — and that part was perfect.
On our first morning, we visited the Acropolis. GetYourGuide sent the ticket straight to our inbox, and everything went super smoothly.
Afterward, we had to head to the stop at the Acropolis and exchange our voucher for a paper ticket for the bus. A bit unnecessary, honestly.
On Day 1, we took the Athens city line. One downside: the audio commentary was way too fast-paced, so we didn’t actually pick up much.
The beach and Piraeus line was a different story, though — we really enjoyed it. You ride along the coast and can hop off at whichever beach catches your eye.
The yellow line buses are now operated by Big Bus. Whether that’s improved the overall experience is something we can’t say yet — we’ll update this as soon as we find out!
