How to get tickets to Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam?
Van Gogh Museum tickets can be booked through three reputable providers:
Very important: There are no tickets on site! You must therefore book your ticket online.
Tickets are booked out more quickly in advance via GetYourGuide and Tiqets. Here you have to book your Van Gogh ticket about 2 weeks before your visit.
You can also get tickets more spontaneously in the official museum online store. Sometimes even for the same day.
Our experience with buying tickets
We booked our ticket via the official online store and had problems with the credit card payment process. Our payment was repeatedly declined. Even when we tried a different card.
We only discovered the error after a few hours. We had selected both the ticket and the audio guide. The audio guide was the trigger for an error when booking. As soon as we deleted the audio guide from our shopping cart, the order worked.
Annoying. But at least we had our ticket. And we hope that this won’t happen to you with our tip.
With the confirmation email and your ticket, you will also receive a separate option to book the audio guide online in advance. Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful in this case too. The payment was rejected again.
So we had to bite the bullet and hope that there would be an audio guide for us on site.
Alternatively, we chose and downloaded a Van Gogh Museum app. We’ll introduce you to it in more detail in a moment.
Are there guided tours of the Van Gogh Museum?
Yes, you can book guided tours of the Van Gogh Museum. However, at 80 to 130 euros per person for around 2 hours, they are really expensive.

Is Van Gogh Museum included in an Amsterdam pass?
Unfortunately, just like the Anne Frank House, the Van Gogh Museum is not included in any Amsterdam Citypass – not even in the I Amsterdam City Card.
Van Gogh Museum Audioguide & App
As mentioned above, there is an audio guide for the Van Gogh Museum in 12 languages. You can either book it online via the museum store and collect it from the museum or hire it on site. The price is around 4 euros.

It didn’t work out for us to book the audio guide. So we wanted to hire an audio guide on site. But here, too, the next lull. There weren’t enough audio guides for all visitors. That’s why preference was given to visitors who booked online.
It was like a jinx. But we wouldn’t be us if we didn’t have immediate solutions!
So we got out our cell phones – albeit a little sadly – and opened the Van Gogh Museum app we had downloaded as an alternative. And it actually did the trick!
The app is available free of charge for iOS and Android. But only in English.
In the app you will find different categories on the start page. We have only used the 5 sections that deal with the different works by Van Gogh. For example, Works from Nuenen and Works from Antwerp. They are arranged in the app in exactly the same way as in the museum.
In each section you will find the most important works. And these are then explained to you in a short text. Very exciting. And definitely better than no information at all.
Van Gogh Museum Visit: Tips & Info
So that you are optimally prepared, we will now give you information and tips for your visit to the Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam.
Where is the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam?
The Van Gogh Museum is located on the so-called Museumplein behind the Rijksmuseum in the south of Amsterdam city center.
The exact address is: Museumplein 6, 1071 DJ Amsterdam
How do you get to the Van Gogh Museum?
In Amsterdam you can do almost everything on foot. And we always find the way to the Museumplein and therefore also to the Van Gogh Museum, through the underpass of the Rijksmuseum, particularly beautiful.
So if you’re a good walker, you shouldn’t miss out on the walk.
If you can’t walk long distances, the Museumplein train stop is close to the museum. From there, it’s only a few steps to the museum.
Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam opening hours
The Van Gogh Museum is open daily from 9 am to 6 pm. On Fridays, the museum even closes at 9 pm.
Best time to visit the Van Gogh Museum
The Van Gogh Museum is very busy all year round. However, the museum is at its quietest between 9 and 10 in the morning.

Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam waiting times
Because the Van Gogh Museum tickets always have a time slot for entry, there are never long waiting times outside. We didn’t even stand in line for 5 minutes.
You also never have to wait long at the toilets, café, lockers or elevators.
The longest waiting times in the Van Gogh Museum are at the counter for the audio guides and at the cash desks in the museum stores. But even here you won’t have to wait longer than 10 minutes.

Is there a checkroom at the Van Gogh Museum?
The Van Gogh Museum has a corner in the foyer with lockers in three sizes. You use them like this:
You go to a free touch screen in front of the lockers, select your language and which locker size you need.
Then set a code and a small icon so that nobody else can open your locker. Remember both well!
The touchscreen now shows you the locker number and the locker is ready for you. Simply put your things in, close it and you’re done.

How crowded is the Van Gogh Museum?
The Van Gogh Museum is very busy and it’s rare to stand alone in front of a painting. However, because the museum is so big, everything flows pretty well. Only some rooms are more crowded.
Really good: the visitors solve the problem on their own and line up in the rooms along the wall with the pictures. This way, everyone can view each picture in turn.

How many hours for Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam?
You should allow at least 2 hours for the Van Gogh Museum.
We were there for 2 hours including a detour to the café and the stores and found that a little too short. We could easily have stayed for 3 hours.
Is there a museum store?
There is not just one Van Gogh museum store, but 4: one outside on the Museumplein and 3 inside the museum.
In all 4 stores you can buy the usual small souvenirs, but also toys for children, posters, books and other exciting things. There is even Van Gogh perfume! And it smells really good.

Does Van Gogh Museum have a café?
Yes, the Van Gogh Museum also offers food and drink. And again, double and triple.
There is a restaurant on the first floor where you can get salads, soups, fries, burgers and sweet pastries and a small café in the foyer.
We were in the small café and didn’t want to miss out on trying the Van Gogh cookie. And luckily we did! Super chocolaty with sunflower seeds – inspired by Van Gogh’s sunflower painting.
Is Starry Night in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam?
No. It hangs in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Our experience at the Van Gogh Museum: Is it worth it?
We were there at 12 noon on a Tuesday. It was already relatively full at this time. But that was the earliest time slot we could get for that day. Nevertheless, we didn’t have long waiting times.
The museum building itself has a very modern and open design. This sets off the works of art even better. And in the Van Gogh Museum, one highlight really does follow the next.
Even in the first room, we couldn’t stop being amazed.
The room is called “Face to Face with Van Gogh” and displays a large collection of portraits and self-portraits by Van Gogh. It’s a great way to start by looking the artist in the eye, so to speak.

The other rooms and levels are divided according to creative period. From the beginnings in Nuenen and Antwerp to Paris and Arles. And each room has its very own highlight.
These definitely include “The Potato Eaters”, “Fifteen Sunflowers” and “Almond Tree in Bloom”. Works that pretty much every art fan will recognize.
However, contrary to our expectations, we personally were even more captivated by the lesser-known paintings than the well-known pieces. We even discovered new paintings for ourselves during our visit to the Van Gogh Museum.
In addition to Van Gogh’s paintings, the museum also exhibits works by his artist friends and artists who inspired Vincent Van Gogh.
Here we also let our art nerd selves out for a moment and found it really exciting to see what influences the works of these artists might have had on Van Gogh.
For those who don’t enjoy this, there are a few interactive tools and a timeline or two with information about Van Gogh.
Not a single corner of the museum is boring.

Is it worth going to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam?
Yes, and how worthwhile it is! We would even say that the Van Gogh Museum is one of the best museums in Amsterdam.
Even if you’re not really into art, it’s easy to recognize the great significance behind the museum.
Is an entrance fee of around 20 euros justified? Mh, well. It is expensive. But for that money you also get to see world-famous art. So it’s okay.
Is there anything we miss or don’t like so much? No. On the whole, the museum has everything your heart desires. If we want to complain, then we will do so at the highest level.
And that’s about the fact that not all the Van Gogh works are hanging here. Understandably so. But we really would have loved to have seen The Starry Night.
And would we go in again? Yes. Even if you could tick the museum off as a once-in-a-lifetime experience, we would go back and spend more than 2 hours in the museum. As you know, you can always discover something new in pictures anyway.
So our little appeal to you: Book a ticket for the Van Gogh Museum, see for yourself and find your favorite Van Gogh painting.
