Are you wondering when to travel to Amsterdam? The best time to visit Amsterdam is in late summer and early fall from late August to early October.
During this time, the temperatures are pleasantly mild and there are still many hours of sunshine per day. In other words, the perfect weather for successful sightseeing.
In addition, hotels in Amsterdam become cheaper again from August onwards and there are fewer people in the city than during the summer vacations, for example. Even some great Amsterdam boutique hotels are affordable then.

The Climate in Amsterdam
Due to its proximity to the North Sea, Amsterdam has a temperate maritime climate.
This means that it is only moderately hot in summer, averaging 22 degrees, and winter only has a few very cold days.
The humidity is also relatively pleasant all year round. It is neither too dry nor too humid.
On the other hand, the wind tends to blow a little harder in Amsterdam and not only makes temperatures feel colder, but also makes the weather rather unstable. You should have an umbrella with you at all times of the year.

January is one of the rainiest months in Amsterdam and really gray. The sun is not visible for more than 3 hours a day and it rains more than 10 days a month.
Temperatures average around 4 degrees, but it gets a little colder towards the end of the month.

February is the coldest month in Amsterdam and probably also the month in which you are most likely to expect snow.
The average temperature is 3 degrees. On the other hand, the sun shines more often than in January and it only rains on around 9 days a month.

March marks the start of tulip season in Amsterdam. But only very slowly. The hours of sunshine still take precedence over the rainy days.
On average, the sun shines 6 hours a day at 6 degrees. March has 10 rainy days.
Weather in Amsterdam in April
From April onwards, the hours of sunshine finally outnumber the rainy days. However, the weather is still very unstable – typical for April.
With an average temperature of 9 degrees, it rains about 7 days a month and the sun shines for 8 hours a day.

May really lives up to its nickname “merry month” and brings perfect travel weather for Amsterdam – a great time to visit Amsterdam!

By the way: if you still want to experience the tulip season in Amsterdam, May is your last chance to do so every year.

June is the sunniest month in Amsterdam. The sun shines for over 10 hours a day and temperatures rise to an average of 15 degrees.
There are only about 9 days of rain in the whole month. Great for canal cruises through Amsterdam.

July is very similar to June, but slightly warmer.
The average temperature is 18 degrees with around 10 hours of sunshine per day and 9 days of rain per month.
Weather in Amsterdam in August
You can also experience really beautiful summer days in Amsterdam in August. With an average temperature of 17 degrees, the sun shines for 9 hours a day. How about a city tour of Amsterdam in fine weather, for example?

September in Amsterdam often promises typical late summer weather. For us it’s one of the best months to visit Amsterdam.
With an average of 15 degrees and 7 hours of sunshine a day, it’s a great way to end the summer.
However, with 10 days of rain a month, the weather is slowly becoming more unpredictable.

October is the month with the highest humidity in Amsterdam. With an average of 11 degrees and 11 days of rain, it’s no wonder. But that doesn’t bother you at all when sightseeing.
What’s more, the sun still shines for a good 5 hours a day.

November in Amsterdam is as dreary as it is here in Germany. An average of 7 degrees, 13 rainy days and only 4 hours of sun per day.
Fortunately, there are many activities in Amsterdam even when it’s raining in Amsterdam. So your city trip won’t fall through.

You will look in vain for Christmas snow flurries in Amsterdam. And with an average temperature of 4 degrees, the snow is a long time coming.
Instead, it rains for half the month and the sun only shines for about 3 hours a day. But hey, luckily there are so many great museums in Amsterdam!
When is the Cheapest Time to Visit Amsterdam?
Amsterdam is cheapest outside the high season from October to February.
However, this only applies to hotel prices. Admission prices for attractions remain the same all year round.
When Are the Fewest Tourists in Amsterdam?
The fewest tourists are in Amsterdam in January and February.
However, the weather can get pretty uncomfortable then and put a damper on sightseeing.
If you are looking for a good middle ground, then we recommend October.
In our experience, the weather in Amsterdam in early October is still pleasantly mild, but the streets are no longer as crowded as in the high season.
And the famous sights in Amsterdam such as the Rijksmuseum and the Anne Frank House are also less crowded.

The best time to see tulips in Amsterdam starts at the end of March and lasts until the end of May.
The tulip festival at Keukenhof near Amsterdam also takes place every year during this time. This is a really popular day trip destination from Amsterdam in spring.
