Algarve
Spectacular cliffs, golden coves, and blue Atlantic waters: your guide to the Algarve.
Our Guide to the Algarve
-
Flair
Dramatic sea cliffs, golden sandy bays, and a genuinely laid-back surfer vibe — the Algarve has a look unlike anywhere else in Europe.
-
Best Time to Visit
For a beach vacation, May through September is your sweet spot. July and August are peak season — busy and pricier. June and September are our favorites: warm, sunny, and far fewer crowds.
-
How Long to Stay
Plan at least seven to ten days. The Algarve stretches over 100 miles of coastline, and the western and eastern ends feel like completely different destinations.
-
Price Level
Moderate — and noticeably more affordable than most Mediterranean beach destinations. Eating and drinking out especially won't break the bank.
-
Food
Don't leave without trying a cataplana — a slow-cooked fish stew prepared in a traditional copper pot. It's seriously good and totally unique to the region.
-
Getting Around
Rent a car. Full stop. Public transport barely reaches the best beaches, and having wheels is the only way to explore freely at your own pace.
Where is the Algarve?
The Algarve is a region at the southern tip of Portugal.
The region splits into two parts: the west coast and the south coast. Both face the Atlantic Ocean — and you’ll feel that the moment you step into the water!
What most visitors completely miss: the Algarve isn’t just coastline. There’s a whole inland area that’s seriously worth a detour.
FAQ
How expensive is the Algarve?
The Algarve is a pretty affordable destination overall. Gas, groceries, and eating out are all noticeably cheaper than in most of Western Europe.
If you really want to stretch your budget, stay inland — everything is a bit cheaper once you get away from the coast.
What language do they speak in the Algarve?
The Algarve is part of Portugal, so the official language is Portuguese.
In the larger, tourist-friendly resort towns, English works just fine. In the smaller inland villages, though, that’s often a different story — a few basic Portuguese phrases will go a long way.
How much time do you need in the Algarve?
It really depends on what you want to do.
For a pure beach vacation, seven days gives you enough time to explore a good variety of beaches without rushing.
For a city trip — say, to Lagos — budget around three days.
If you’re planning a road trip through the Algarve, you’ll want more time. Ten days is honestly the bare minimum.
