Map of Budget Accommodations in Vienna
We’ve marked the locations of our budget hotels in Vienna on a map.
Our number one pick for cheap hotels in Vienna, the Bassena Donaustadt, has perfect subway connections to the Old Town. You can get to Stephansplatz in just 15 minutes by metro.

Budget Hotels in Vienna
Bassena Wien Donaustadt
Donaustadt, 22nd district: 15 minutes to the Old Town

The Bassena Wien Donaustadt is our top pick for a cheap hotel in Vienna and a true all-rounder when it comes to price, location, design, and amenities.
With the Bassena, you get a stylish design hotel near Donauinsel with an outstanding price-to-value ratio and all the amenities you’d want from a hotel. An excellent breakfast can be added on as an optional extra.
The hotel’s location in Donaustadt is brilliant, even if it doesn’t look that way at first glance. The Kagran subway station is right next to the hotel, and in 15 minutes you can ride directly to Stephansplatz in the heart of Vienna’s Old Town — no transfers needed.
Pension Wienderland
Mariahilf, 6th district: 20 minutes to the Old Town

The Pension Wienderland is a charming guesthouse with an affordable breakfast, a great location, and reasonable prices year-round. One of our favorite picks for budget accommodation in Vienna.
The rooms are simply but cozily furnished, and the host is very warm and welcoming.
There are single and double rooms available, optionally with a private bathroom. If a shared bathroom isn’t an issue for you, you can save even more.
What really wins us over is the pension’s location in the 6th district. You’re right in the middle of Vienna’s trendiest neighborhood, with cool shops and plenty of great restaurants and cafés.
For dinner, you can head out for a fantastic meal right around the corner from your place to stay.
You’re also just one subway stop from the Westbahnhof train station — handy if you’re arriving in Vienna by train.
Wombat´s City Hostel Vienna Naschmarkt
Wieden, 4th district: 20 minutes to the Old Town

The Wombat´s City Hostel is a cool hostel with both dorm rooms and affordable private rooms with en-suite bathrooms, plus a truly good and budget-friendly breakfast.
Wombat´s attracts a younger crowd and has a much livelier atmosphere than Pension Wienderland (our pick #2). The location in Vienna’s nightlife district, right next to the Naschmarkt, is great if you like things buzzing.
Our tip: When we stay at a hostel, we always request a quiet room at the time of booking. That’s always worked out well for us.

Citadines Danube Vienna
Donaustadt, 22nd district: 15 minutes to the Old Town

The Citadines Danube Vienna apartment hotel is located right next door to our pick #1, the Bassena Hotel. So the location is great — you’re just 15 minutes by subway from Stephansplatz.
Pricewise, it’s a bit more expensive than its neighbor. In return, you get stylish design, a homey atmosphere, and a kitchenette for self-catering.
There are also rooms with connecting doors and pull-out sofas. Perfect if you’re visiting Vienna as a family or with friends. Or if grandma and grandpa are tagging along and happy to serve as babysitters.
To Citadines Danube Vienna Hotel
Rioca Vienna Posto 2
Landstraße, 3rd district: 20 minutes to the Old Town

Looking for a unique and affordable apartment hotel in Vienna? Then our pick #5 might be just right for you.
The Rioca Vienna Posto 2 is truly one of a kind. A touch of Brazil right in the heart of Vienna — like you’ve stepped into a Brazilian jungle bursting with color. The rooms have evocative names like Ipanema, Flamengo, or Copacabana. It doesn’t get more exotic than this.
The Rioca is located in a growing new development area, surrounded by university buildings and media companies. You’re not smack in the middle of the tourist action, but a few restaurants are still within walking distance.
You also have really convenient airport connections. You can reach Vienna Airport in 30 minutes by commuter rail with no transfers. And it only takes about 20 minutes by public transit to reach the Innere Stadt or Vienna’s main train station.
Note: Only double rooms are available — no options for extra beds. The Rioca unfortunately isn’t suited for families. In that case, we’d recommend the Citadines Danube (our pick #4) instead.

Campanile Vienna South
Meidling, 12th district: 35 minutes to the Old Town

Our next pick for a cheap hotel in Vienna is the Campanile Vienna South — a bit further from the city center, situated next to a large park.
The rooms are simple and classically furnished, and you’ll find a good and affordable breakfast on offer.
We’d definitely recommend adding breakfast here, since there are no cafés or restaurants nearby. And the McDonald’s across the street doesn’t really count as a serious option.
The Campanile offers solid value for money year-round. Since it’s a relatively large hotel, you can almost always find an affordable room — except during trade fair periods.
If you don’t mind getting around Vienna by public transit, the Campanile is a genuine value-for-money pick in the city.

Motel One Wien-Hauptbahnhof
Favoriten, 10th district: 20 minutes to the Old Town

Whenever we’re hunting for budget hotels in a city like Vienna, we always check whether there’s a Motel One in a good location. Motel One is simply a reliable classic that never disappoints.
Why? With Motel One, we know exactly what we’re getting: a stylish design hotel at a fair price. You really can’t go wrong.
At Motel One Wien-Hauptbahnhof, prices fluctuate quite a bit throughout the year, but it’s always worth checking whether the rate on your preferred dates works for you.
The Motel One at Vienna’s main train station is our favorite, but there’s also a Motel One at the Westbahnhof. That one is equally good and even closer to Vienna’s popular Mariahilf neighborhood (6th district).
To Motel One Wien-Hauptbahnhof
Superbude Hotel Wien Prater
Leopoldstadt, 2nd district: 25 minutes to the Old Town
Not into reliable chains like Motel One — you want something individual that’s still affordable? Then the Superbude Hotel Wien Prater is the perfect budget lodging in Vienna for you.
The Superbude Wien Prater is simply something different — totally one of a kind, and in our opinion one of the coolest hotels in Vienna.
Here you’ll find rooms for every need: double rooms with creative names like Doppelbude, Vogelhaus, or Lesezimmer, and four-bed rooms for families and friends.
Our highlight is the 5-bed rooms! In the Kinobude, Discobude, or Game City Bude, you’ll find five beds in the room — perfect for larger groups.
The hotel’s location right at the Prater, with views of the Vienna Giant Ferris Wheel and the amusement park, is great for families. The Prater is lively during the day, and things quiet down in the evenings. Don’t come here looking for nightlife.
A handful of restaurants are within walking distance of the hotel. Plus, you’re excellently connected to the Old Town by subway.
If you’re lucky, you might score the Superbude’s distinctive design at a bargain price during the off-season.

Austria Trend Hotel Bosei Wien
Favoriten, 10th district: 40 minutes to the Old Town

Our final budget hotel pick in Vienna is the large Austria Trend Hotel Bosei — a no-frills 4-star business hotel on the edge of a large golf course.
Golf? Yep, that’s right. We’re not golfers, and a golf course right outside the window doesn’t exactly make us shout “Woohoo!”
But the Austria Trend Hotel has one advantage that earned it a spot on our list of affordable Vienna hotels: free parking!
Parking in Vienna is expensive and a hassle everywhere. If you’re driving to Vienna, you can park your car for free at this hotel. Bonus: there are also EV charging stations in the large hotel parking lot.
The location overlooking the golf course and recreation park is calm and relaxed. If you want to stay away from the big-city hustle, the Austria Trend Hotel is a good fit.
Public transit connections into the city center aren’t ideal, but they’re manageable. The nearest subway station is 15 minutes on foot from the hotel. From there, it takes about 30 minutes by train to reach the Old Town.
FAQ: General Tips for Budget Accommodations in Vienna
Where can I stay centrally in Vienna on a budget?
In the Innere Stadt, Vienna’s Old Town centered around Stephansplatz, there are plenty of hotels. They’re not exactly cheap, though — you’re definitely paying a premium for the location.
Your hotel doesn’t have to be right in the Old Town, however. In the surrounding districts just outside the Old Town ring, you’ll find many good and affordable Vienna accommodations with excellent public transportation connections. Some highlights are even within walking distance from these areas.
We’ve written a detailed article about which neighborhoods are best suited for an overnight stay in Vienna:
Where can I stay in Vienna with kids on a budget?
The 2nd district, Leopoldstadt, is in our opinion a great choice for a family vacation with kids in Vienna.
In Leopoldstadt, the Prater offers a large amusement park, the Giant Ferris Wheel, and plenty of playgrounds to keep things interesting. On the flip side, the 2nd district doesn’t have much going on at night — which is actually a plus when the kids are still young and go to bed early.
Our hotel recommendation for families in Leopoldstadt is the Superbude Hotel Wien Prater. Not always a bargain, but seriously unique and right next to the Prater.
As an alternative to the 2nd district, we also recommend Donaustadt, the 22nd district.
There are many larger hotels here in the immediate vicinity of the Danube Island, which is especially wonderful with kids in the summer.
Lots of green space, great playgrounds, swimming spots, and no cars — sounds good, right? Hotels in Donaustadt are also relatively affordable compared to other neighborhoods and offer great value for families.
Our hotel recommendation for families in Donaustadt is the Citadines Danube Vienna, with spacious apartments, rooms with connecting doors, and a subway line heading straight to the Old Town right at the doorstep.
When is it cheapest to stay overnight in Vienna?
Vienna is — like many city trip destinations in Europe — a year-round travel destination.
There’s no real off-season where hotel prices drop significantly. Between January and March it’s a bit cheaper than during the summer months — but then again, it’s also winter in Vienna.
We’d advise against a city trip to Vienna in late June. That’s when the famous Donauinselfest takes place and the city gets seriously packed. Hotels are also extremely expensive during that period. If you want to find affordable hotels in Vienna, it’s best to avoid those dates.
Our Verdict on Budget and Central Accommodations in Vienna
The center of Vienna isn’t just the so-called Innere Stadt — the Old Town with St. Stephen’s Cathedral as the city’s landmark.
In neighboring districts like Mariahilf, Leopoldstadt, and Donaustadt, many activities in Vienna are also reachable on foot or by public transit in just a few minutes.
Even if you’re only visiting Vienna for a weekend, your accommodation doesn’t have to be within the Old Town ring to be centrally located.
Our top pick for a great cheap hotel in Vienna is the Bassena Wien Donaustadt. It’s not right in the city center, but the connections are perfect. There’s a subway station right at the hotel, from which you can reach Stephansplatz in about 15 minutes with no transfers.
